GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan scored 37 points, including the game-winning pull-up jumper as time expired, as the Chicago Bulls squandered a 23-point lead before recovering for a 112-110 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Mookie Blaylock completed Atlanta's long comeback with a three-pointer with 34 seconds to play, tying it at 108-108. But Jordan, who was rested for the first half of the fourth quarter, hit a 16-foot bank shot over Steve Smith with 10.8 seconds left. Smith was fouled on the next possession and calmly sank both free throws to lift the Hawks into a 110-110 tie.

Jordan took the inbounds pass from Toni Kukoc, dribbled to his right and drained an 18-foot jumper as the horn sounded, giving the Bulls their third straight victory. Jordan had 12 points in the fourth, despite playing only 6:40.

"It counts no matter how you look at it. Unfortunately we had to get to that point," Jordan said. "I was able to get open because I saw Chucky coming and I used him as a screen on Smith. I got a feeling we are going to look at a lot of tape tomorrow."

Jordan was asked if he felt his team lacks a killer instinct.

"I think our first team played with that type of intensity in the first half. Our second team failed to do that in the fourth quarter. We need to get back that intensity because we have tough games with Detroit and Indiana coming up."

Scottie Pippen added 24 points for Chicago, which won for the 18th time in 19 home games. The Bulls have won six straight home contests over Atlanta, which has not won in Chicago since December 2nd, 1994.

"I have nothing to say other than the fact that we played three good qaurters and one really poor one," Bulls coach Phil Jackson said. "I'm at a point where I don't think I can talk to you guys about anything further."

Smith finished with 26 points, Dikembe Mutombo had 24 points and 15 rebounds and Alan Henderson and Blaylock each chipped in 20 points for the Hawks, who split their six-game road trip.

"We were supposed to double-team on the last shot and we ended up bumping ech other off, we didn't execute the play," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "Chucky came around the inside instead of the outside of Michael. Michael was able to get around Steve Smith with that screen. Give him credit, he's a great player and he made a great shot."

Pippen made the second of back-to-back three-pointers with 8:51 left in the third quarter to give Chicago its biggest lead at 76-53. But Atlanta closed the quarter on a 7-2 run to pull within 91-74 entering the fourth.

Dennis Rodman's basket 49 seconds into the fourth put the Bulls up 93-76 before the Hawks embarked on a 13-2 run to make it 95-89 with seven minutes left. Chucky Brown scored six straight points in the burst, capping it with a pair of free throws.

Pippen hit a jumper and Jordan added a runner in the lane with 5:20 to play, giving the Bulls a 99-89 advantage. But Mutombo converted a three-point play and Henderson made a layup to pull the Hawks within 99-94 with 3:53 to go.

"We didn't quit, this team doesn't quit," Blaylock said. "We kept fighting and they let us back in the game. "The lesson in this game for us is that we have to come out and play more aggressively early in the game, not to wait and get down by 23."

Blaylock buried a three-pointer with 3:24 left before Jordan hit two foul shots with 2:47 remaining as Chicago took a 103-97 lead. But Smith drained a three-pointer and hit a running jumper to close the Hawks within 103-102 with 1:59 left.

"The play before Michael's shot was unbelievable," Smith said of the bank shot. "I kind of blocked it and he still shot it off the glass. That's Michael for you. We played well enough to come back but we never should've put ourselves in that hole. We don't take any positives out of this, maybe if we were a young team we could, but this is just another loss."

Rodman hit one of two free throws with 57 seconds to go before Blaylock drilled another three-pointer four seconds later to make it a one-point game. Two foul shots by Rodman gave Chicago a 108-105 edge, but Blaylock struck again with another three to forge a 108-108 tie.

Luc Longley had 12 points and Ron Harper added 10 for the Bulls, who shot 53 percent (41-for-78) from the field.

Chicago shot a blistering 18-for-24 (75 percent), including 10 points from Jordan, in the first quarter for a 36-26 lead. The Bulls used a 9-2 run for a 62-44 lead with 1:45 left in the second quarter, but the Hawks pulled within 64-49 at halftime.

Brown finished with 11 points and Blaylock handed out nine assists for Atlanta, which shot 48 percent (39-for-82) from the field.
