GAME RECAP

The Portland Trail Blazers overcame the offcourt distractions of a six-player trade involving Toronto Raptors guard Damon Stoudamire and Isaiah Rider returning from a one-game suspension to rout the Houston Rockets, 105-81.

The Trail Blazers were left with just nine players after they made a blockbuster deal earlier in the day, getting Stoudamire and forwards Walt Williams and Carlos Rogers from Toronto for guards Kenny Anderson and Alvin Williams, along with forward Gary Trent, two first-round picks and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Rider, who missed Thursday's 115-110 win in Phoenix due to a one-game team suspension after walking out on Dunleavy in the fourth quarter of a win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, led the Trail Blazers with 25 points on 11-of-21 shooting.

"It's hard to express what a great game this was for us and our team," Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Here we were with limited resources, and everybody pulled together and played the way we wanted to play since day one."

Stoudamire is expected to step in as the starting point guard, but for this contest, Rick Brunson was the only player left on Portland's roster that plays the point. The rookie from Temple came through with 16 points and career highs of eight assists and five rebounds.

"This was an opportunity that came my way and I had to take advantage of it," Brunson said. "It was a day with a lot of mixed emotions for me. Alvin Williams is one of my best friends and I hated to see him go. I just told him to bust his butt in Toronto and we'd hook up this summer for some ball."

Charles Barkley had 18 points and nine rebounds off the bench for the Rockets, but fellow future Hall-of-Famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler combined for just 13 points on 4-of-19 shooting.

"We took Portland lightly because of the trade," Drexler admitted. "They were so relaxed, they had no expectations. We were flat and stagnant."

Arvydas Sabonis had 17 points and 14 rebounds for Portland, which opened the game with an 11-0 spurt and never trailed. He had five points in the Blazers' game-opening 19-4 run, capped by Brunson's jumper with 6:21 left in the first quarter.

Portland, which won the season series, 3-1, shot 53 percent from the field (41-of-77) while holding Houston to just 36 percent (27-of-76). The 81 points was the Rockets' all-time low in the 120-game history of the series.

"You never know how a team will react to trades," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "Portland thought it was the underdog and came out with the mindset they had nothing to lose."

Rasheed Wallace and Stacey Augmon chipped in 13 points apiece for the Blazers, who have won three straight games and four in a row at home.

"The things we've been doing in the last three games have really excited me," Dunleavy said. "We defend, we rebound, we get out and run, and that's the winning formula."

Rider and Sabonis each had nine points throughout the opening period, helping Portland to a 33-16 cushion. Houston reeled off 15 straight points early in the second quarter to pull within 35-31 on a short jumper by Olajuwon, but Portland steadily rebuilt its advantage.

Rider drained a three-pointer with 1:17 left to increase the lead to 51-39. He finished with 14 points in the first half as the Blazers took a 53-41 edge at the break.

A three-pointer by Rider and two baskets by Augmon pushed the lead to 60-41 with 8:22 left in the third quarter. Barkley hit a lay-in and two free throws to trim the deficit to 76-64 with 9:39 to go, but Portland reeled off the next eight points to seal the victory. Kelvin Cato had six of his 10 points during that stretch.

"We struggled and it's no excuse that Portland was playing with others than their regular lineup," Barkley said. "Portland didn't want the ones they traded, so that didn't make any difference."

Houston's Rodrick Rhodes scored 14 points starting in place of forward Mario Elie, who missed the game with a sprained left ankle. Kevin Willis added 13 points for the Rockets, who were outrebounded, 47-34.
