GAME RECAP

Vin Baker scored seven points in overtime as the Seattle SuperSonics handed the Los Angeles Lakers their first home loss of the season to a Western Conference rival, 113-108, in a matchup of the league's top two teams.

Baker finished with 33 points and 10 rebounds and Gary Payton added 30 points and nine assists for Seattle, which has won six of its last seven games. The Sonics have won consecutive games at the Great Western Forum after dropping their previous three.

"This was definitely our biggest game of the year," said Seattle head coach George Karl. "I'm extremely happy with this win. Our team is very special. During the beginning of the season, we were afraid to say that but now I can say this is a very special team."

Shaquille O'Neal scored a season-high 44 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Robert Horry chipped in with 15 and 14 for the Lakers, who lost to a conference rival at home for the first time in 15 games.

"We haven't played our best when we play them," O'Neal said. "And even though we were still able to hang in there, I think if we can put together a complete game against them. We'd be all right."

O'Neal had six points in an 11-1 run that closed out the fourth quarter and forced overtime. He started the burst with a layup with 3:21 left in regulation that cut Seattle's lead to 96-86 and his 11-foot jumper with 17.8 seconds left in the quarter tied the game at 97-97.

Baker opened the scoring in the extra session with a jumper with 4:50 left but Nick Van Exel nailed a three-pointer 50 seconds later to give Los Angeles only its second lead of the game, 100-99.

After Baker converted the second of two free throws with 3:41 left to knot the score at 100-100, the Lakers took their final lead 20 seconds later on a jumper by O'Neal.

The Sonics took a 105-102 lead when Perkins hit a three-pointer and Detlef Schrempf buried a jumper with 2:14 remaining.

O'Neal pulled Los Angeles within 105-104 but Baker made a layup and then hit a jumper to give Seattle a 109-104 advantage with 49 seconds left.

Kobe Bryant made two free throws with 41.8 seconds left and, after Payton hit one of two from the free throw line, scored on a driving layup as Los Angeles closed to 110-108 with 20 seconds left.

Schrempf pushed the lead to three with a free throw with 15.8 seconds left. He then sealed Seattle's second victory of the season over the Lakers by draining two free throws after Bryant's potential game-tying three-pointer with 10 seconds left hit the back of the rim.

"I though it was good when it left my hand," Bryant said. "It hit the back of the rim and just rattled out. It felt like it was going to go when I released it but it didn't."

Dale Ellis scored 14 points, Sam Perkins added 13 and Schrempf 11 for the Sonics, who shot 53 percent from the field (41-for-78), including 12-of-23 (52 percent) from three-point range.

Bryant finished with 15 points and Rick Fox added 14 and nine rebounds for the Lakers, who made just 5-of-25 from three-point range but held a 56-36 edge in rebounding. Horry's 10 offensive rebounds were a career-high.

"The difference in the game is that they hit their three-pointers and we didn't," Los Angeles head coach Del Harris said. "We rebounded very well throughout the game. We played one bad quarter, the first, and spent the rest of the game catching up."
