GAME RECAP

Stephon Marbury scored nine of his 23 points in overtime, when the Minnesota Timberwolves set a club record for points en route to a 105-99 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

The Mavericks snapped a 22-road game losing streak Friday night when Michael Finley hit a 27-footer with one second left in the second overtime to give the Mavericks an 85-82 win over Indiana. Dallas was attempting to win back-to-back road games for the first time since opening the season with victories at Vancouver and Seattle.

Finley, who finished with 31 points, hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 86-86.

But the Timberwolves scored a club-record 19 points in overtime. A layup by Marbury with 2:30 left gave Minnesota the lead for good at 93-91. After Finley made 1-of-2 free throws, Marbury scored on a five-foot floater from the left baseline while being fouled and completed the three-point play to increase the lead to 96-92 with 1:30 remaining.

Terry Porter converted a three-pointer and a free throw, Marbury scored on a layup and Kevin Garnett added three free throws in the final minute to seal the win for Minnesota.

"We have to continue learning to play with each other, especially without Googs (injured forward Tom Gugliotta)," said Marbury. "It's a harder task for us now. Everybody has to step their game up."

A layup by Finley with 34 seconds left pulled Dallas within 101-99, but Dallas was called for an illegal defense and Porter hit the free throw with 18 seconds remaining. The Mavericks then intentionally fouled Garnett, who converted 3-of-4 free throws in the final 16 seconds.

"Unfortunately, the illegal defense call, which I thought was a bad one, took a great game and essentially ended it," said Mavericks coach Don Nelson. "Unfortunate, but that's life. I'm not going to complain about it. The call took the game out of the player's hands."

Sam Mitchell, who is playing a more prominent role due to the injury to starting forward Tom Gugliotta, scored a season-high 25 points and Garnett finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Timberwolves.

Minnesota held an 82-75 lead with 3:30 left in regulation before Hubert Davis scored seven points to spark a 9-1 run for Dallas. Davis hit a 19-foot jumper and a layup to start the spurt. After Garnett converted 1-of-2 free throws, Davis connected on a 25-footer to pull the Mavs within 83-82 with 1:28 remaining.

Minnesota was called for a 24-second violation and Finley hit a 17-foot baseline jumper to give Dallas an 84-83 lead with 46 seconds left.

The Timberwolves reclaimed the lead on a three-pointer by Porter with 34 seconds left. But Finley's free throws tied it, and Marbury was called for traveling with 3.6 seconds left. Finley missed a 17-footer at the buzzer.

Davis finished with 15 points and A.C. Green had 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Mavericks.

"Marbury killed us in overtime," said Green. "The bottom line is we could have had one. We didn't get it done when we had our chance in regulation. It's a tough way to lose."

Porter had 16 points and nine assists off the bench for the Timberwolves, who won their second overtime decision against the Mavericks this season. The Timberwolves won at Dallas, 113-110, on January 17th.

"We keep on talking about Mitchell and Porter being old and that we will wear them out, but they just keep on going," said Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders. "Hopefully, they'll keep on going for another 30-some games."

Rookie Bubba Wells scored eight of his season-high 10 points in the first quarter, when Dallas built a 22-15 lead. A dunk by Garnett capped an 8-0 second quarter run which put Minnesota ahead 30-29 with 3:34 left in the half.

The Timberwolves increased their lead to as big as 56-46 on a layup by Marbury with 5:33 left in the third quarter. Dallas responded with a 16-5 run to take a 62-61 lead with 33 seconds left in the period. Finley and Dennis Scott combined for 10 points in the run.
