GAME RECAP

Nick Anderson scored 20 of his 28 points in the first half and Mark Price hit a key three-pointer with 82 seconds remaining, leading the Orlando Magic to an 85-81 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, who suffered their third straight loss.

Horace Grant added 17 points and 16 rebounds and Danny Schayes, pressed into a starting role, had 10 and 13 for Orlando, which snapped a four-game losing streak in Atlanta. The Magic, who were without star guard Penny Hardaway and center Rony Seikaly, have won for of their last six contests.

"I told the guys after the game we can shoot 35 percent if we rebound like that and not give them second shots," Orlando coach Chuck Daly said. "It was a heck of a win for us, we hung in and hung in and were fortunate to get a win. We've got good people that want to do the right thing. One of the keys was we shot 40 percent, that's a good number for us."

Hardaway did not play due to a strained left calf, while Seikaly was traded to Utah tonight in exchange for center Greg Foster, forward Chris Morris and a 1998 first-round draft pick, forcing the Magic to start Schayes at center.

"We didn't have Seikaly or Hardaway, it's something we've been battling with all year," Price said. "We play with what we have, tonight we played good defense."

Price and Anderson both commented on the trade.

"It's always tough and it happens," Price said. "Rony is a teammate and a friend for years. That's part of the business."

"I don't know what's going on, I though his foot was bothering him, that's news to me," Anderson said. "I was blind by that fact. We're just playing hard, just staying with it. If you play hard, anything can happen."

Steve Smith hit a jumper with 6:11 left in the fourth quarter to give the Hawks their last lead of the game, 77-76. Bo Outlaw hit a shot in the lane with 5:07 to play to put the Magic ahead for good and another basket by Outlaw with 2:14 remaining gave Orlando an 80-77 advantage.

Mookie Blaylock's 15-foot jumper 17 seconds later drew Atlanta within one, but Price, who finished with 11 points, drilled a three-pointer with 1:22 left, giving Orlando an 83-79 lead. Alan Henderson's tip-in with 59 seconds to go made it 83-81, but Grant's jumper with 43 seconds left capped the scoring.

"It was huge, not only for the team but for me," said Price, who was 4-of-12 from the field. "It seemed like I couldn't get the lid off tonight, I'm glad it went in. Every shot seemed like a tough shot."

Smith had 22 points, Dikembe Mutombo collected 19 and 19 rebounds and Henderson chipped in 18 points for the Hawks, who have lost 10 of their last 14 games. Forward Christian Laettner missed his fourth straight game with the flu.

"We missed some shots, that's going to happn," Smith said. "I took some tough shots, a lot in frustration. We have been through tougher times, the seven-game losing streak. This has not been a good rhythm, even in games we've won. You just got to go out there, keep practicing, get some wins and get back into it."

"Our shot selection has been horrendous and execution has not been real good," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We've got to come out and jump on a team like that and we really didn't. We don't seem to have the enthusiasm, there is something missing."

Anderson scored 11 points in the opening quarter, helping Orlando to a 23-22 lead. He added nine more in the second as the Magic built a 46-42 advantage at the break. Smith had eight points and Mutombo seven to close the Hawks within 69-67 after three quarters.

"It was a lot of fun, everybody played hard and helped each other," said Anderson, who was held without a point in the fourth quarter. "It was a team effort, we played a good team tonight, we played a well-coached excellent team tonight."

Blaylock had 10 points and 10 assists for Atlanta, which shot just 40 percent (33-for-82) from the field and missed all 10 of its three-point attempts.
