GAME RECAP

Charles Barkley continued his strong play as a reserve with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting and Hakeem Olajuwon added 21 points and 20 rebounds as the Houston Rockets cruised to a 121-99 rout of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Barkley, who told coach Rudy Tomjanovich he would be better served coming off the bench, played 26 minutes as a reserve. He added seven rebounds and a pair of assists for the Rockets, who have won six straight and 20 of the last 22 from the Clippers.

"He's done a really good job (coming off the bench)," said Tomjanovich. "His energy level has been high, and he's been playing really sharp."

"It doesn't matter who guards me," Barkley said. "They can put big people or little people on me, but as long as they don't double-team me, I'm going to score."

Clyde Drexler added 25 points and Kevin Willis 20 as the Rockets completed an extended weekend sweep in Los Angeles. Eddie Johnson added 14 points off the bench for Houston, which made 56 percent (49-of-87) of its shots from the field and held a 46-41 rebounding edge.

Lamond Murray had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Lorenzen Wright added 12 and 10 for the Clippers, who have dropped four straight and 12 of 13.

"We had no answer for Barkley. We were trying to stop Barkley and didn't" said Clippers coach Bill Fitch, who was again denied a chance to take sole possession of second place on the all-time list. He is tied with legendary Celtics coach Red Auerbach with 938 wins.

The loss may also prove very costly to Los Angeles as Brent Barry was forced to leave the game late in the second quarter with an apparent right ankle injury. Barry's name has been mentioned frequently in trade rumors with the deadline looming Thursday.

"We've been bothered with injuries all season long," said Murray. "We just have to continue to roll on."

The Rockets led by as many as 11 in the first quarter but a three-pointer by Darrick Martin at the buzzer pulled the Clippers within 29-24. Olajuwon grabbed six rebounds as Houston dominated Los Angeles on the boards, 13-7. Murray kept the Clippers close with 11 points, including the first seven of the contest for Los Angeles.

The Clippers took a 33-29 lead, their biggest of the contest, by scoring the first nine points of the second quarter. Los Angeles held a 37-33 advantage with 8:48 to go in the half before Barkley caught fire. He sank a 13-footer and followed with a dunk to knot the contest.

Martin buried his second three-pointer but Barkley had consecutive slams to give Houston a 41-40 lead. Barry hit a three-pointer and Murray recorded a steal and breakaway dunk to give the Clippers a 45-41 advantage. But Barkley fed Johnson for a three-pointer and hit a layup for a 46-45 lead.

Olajuwon hit two free throws with 4:02 to play and Drexler converted a three-point play for a six-point lead with 3:48 remaining. Barkley had 14 points in the quarter as Houston made 11-of-18 shots from the field.

Eric Piatkowski, who finished with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, hit a running jumper to open the second half to draw the Clippers within 55-53. But Olajuwon sank a short hook and was fouled to spark a 10-2 burst that left the Rockets ahead 65-55.

Drexler and Olajuwon had nine points apiece in the quarter as Houston led 89-71 at the end of three. The Clippers made just 8-of-23 shots in the period.
