GAME RECAP

Tony Delk came back to haunt his former club with 20 points as the shorthanded Golden State Warriors picked up consecutive home wins for the first time in over two months with an 88-77 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Donyell Marshall also had 20 points and Erick Dampier netted 18 for the Warriors, who earned back-to-back wins at home for the first time since taking five in a row at Oakland Coliseum Arena from December 5th-23rd. Golden State, which also reached double figures in victories on the season, won for only the third time in 25 games overall.

"We posted up aggressively and we did a good job all night at taking the ball to the basket," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "The second, third and fourth quarter was as good (defensively) that we played all year. At 100 percent this would be a great win, but with 10 guys dressed and being banged up it was an exceptional win."

Delk, who was acquired earlier this season from the Hornets along with Muggsy Bogues, scored 19 points in the first three quarters, helping the Warriors to a 69-61 lead. He was selected 16th overall in the first round of 1996 draft by Charlotte.

The Warriors were without Clarence Weatherspoon and Jim Jackson, who they acquired from the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday in exchange for Joe Smith and Brian Shaw.

Glen Rice scored 31 points to lead Charlotte, which lost for the fourth time in five games. The loss also snapped the Hornets' seven-game winning streak against clubs with losing records.

Golden State held a 49-47 lead at the half behind 14 points from Delk. The Warriors took control early in the third, scoring seven of the first nine points. Marshall had a dunk and, after Rice hit a jumper, made a layup before Delk drained a three-pointer for a 56-49 lead with 9:32 left in the period.

Delk, who was coming off a career-high 26 points on Tuesday, connected on 9-of-17 shots from the field for the Warriors, who shot only 44 percent (30-of-69). Delk is averaging 19 points over his last eight games.

Todd Fuller contributed 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Warriors, who held a 46-39 rebounding edge and forced 18 turnovers that led to 17 points.

Golden State maintained the lead throughout the second half, taking its biggest lead at 85-69 with 4:40 left following a three-point play by Marshall. The closest the Hornets got the rest of the way was the final score.

"Tonight was a pathetic abomination," commented Charlotte coach Dave Cowens on his team's performance. "We obviously didn't come ready to play. They didn't play particularly well, but we were worse. Our mental preparation or professionalism or whatever you want to call it, wasn't there tonight. We didn't play like a team, guys didn't want to pass the ball or move around."

Rice hit just 11-of-27 shots, making only one of seven three-pointers for Charlotte, which shot 39 percent (31-of-79).

"We played like animals out there tonight," Rice said. "We did not play our type of defense that we are capable of. When you give a team like (the Warriors life), they usually come out on top. We sure went out and played hard, but they came out with fire in their eyes and we did not match their intensity."
