GAME RECAP

Clyde Drexler connected on 10-of-14 field goal attempts and scored 29 points, and Charles Barkley had 14 points and 14 rebounds off the bench, leading the Houston Rockets to their third straight victory, 100-90 over the Detroit Pistons.

Drexler, who played 40 minutes, also had seven rebounds, four assists and was 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. Barkley came off the bench for the sixth straight game since the All-Star break, and the Rockets imrpoved to 5-1 in that stretch.

"I think the difference was that we had two days of rest," Drexler said. "The way things have been going for us, with so many games, that seemed like a lifetime. We were fresh tonight and our defense was good."

Hakeem Olajuwon chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Kevin Willis had 12 points for the Rockets, who have won five of their last six games to move two games over the .500 mark (27-25) for the first time since January 16th, when they were 18-16.

"I feel we're getting it," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "It's a very fine line (between winning and losing). You just have to believe in your defensive philosophy and system."

The Rockets played the game without Mario Elie (sprained ankle) and Rodrick Rhodes (flu), forcing Drexler to play extended minutes. Brent Price made a rare start for Houston and scored 11 points in 29 minutes.

Joe Dumars had 19 points and Grant Hill 16 for Detroit, which dropped its fourth straight game on a five-game road trip. The Pistons, who beat the Rockets 104-92 at home on February 5th, have lost seven consecutive road games.

"We don't have a snowball's chance in hell (of winning)," Brian Williams, limited to five points and six rebounds, said. "We just can't keep playing selfishly. We're not passing the ball well. We just pass it once or twice and then shoot."

Houston outshot Detroit from the field, 51 percent (39-for-77) to 43 percent (35-for-82), and from three-point range, 47 percent (8-for-17) to 39 percent (5-for-13).

"Our defense was terrible," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "We're going to have guys guard guys out there, and if they don't, we're going to try somebody else. I'm not angry and that's not meant to be a threat, but we are going to play defense."

Detroit used a 9-2 run over the last 3:22 of the third quarter to pull within three points, at 72-69. Dumars began the spurt with a pair of free throws and Malik Sealy's 15-footer finished it off.

Houston regained control by reeling off a 10-3 run in just over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. Drexler contributed six points to the burst and Matt Bullard capped it with a jumper to increase the Rockets' lead to 82-72.

Four straight free throws by Hill trimmed Houston's lead to 86-78 with 6:38 remaining, but a three-pointer by Bullard completed a 9-3 burst by the Rockets to make it 95-81 with 4:31 left.

The Pistons took their last lead of the game at the eight-minute mark of the first quarter as Dumars sank a three-pointer to make it 29-26. Eddie Johnson answered with a three-pointer to tie the game and a layup to put the Rockets ahead for good, 31-29 with 7:18 left in the quarter.

The game was only played with two officials. Referee Scott Wall sustained a concussion prior to the tipoff after colliding with one of Houston's tumblers. Wall was knocked to the floor and forced to miss the game. Joe Crawford and Greg Willard worked the game alone.
