GAME RECAP

Stephon Marbury scored 27 points and Kevin Garnett added 25 and 17 rebounds as the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Houston Rockets for the second time this season with a 100-95 overtime victory.

Terry Porter contributed 14 points for Minnesota, which was swept in three games by Houston in the first round of the playoffs last season after dropping all four regular-season meetings.

"We've got to go out and play like we did tonight," Porter said. "Seeing Doug (West) get traded and having Googs (Gugliotta) hurt is just a part of the business. Teams have to suck it up and step it up when that happens. No one in the league will fell sorry for us. We just have to go out and get it done."

However, the Timberwolves received bad news when they learned that forward Tom Gugliotta, their leading scorer, will be out for the rest of the season.

Tom Hammonds, who had nine points off the bench, made a layup to give the Timberwolves the lead for good at 93-91 with 3:34 left in overtime.

"We got our running game started," Hammonds said. "We hadn't run that much in the last three or four games, and I think that was a big key."

"We've got 30 games left and we need to try and find a way to continue to play the way did tonight," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "Houston over the last 1 1/2 to two weeks has been playing as well as anybody. It was a nice win."

Hakeem Olajuwon had 20 points and seven rebounds and Kevin Willis added 15 and nine for the Rockets, who had a three-game winning streak stopped.

The fourth quarter featured 13 of the game's 31 lead changes before Olajuwon's lay-in tied it at 89-89 with 21 seconds left. Minnesota had two chances to win the game in regulation, but Garnett missed a six-footer with 11 seconds left and Marbury misfired on a running jumper in the lane with three seconds to go.

Garnett drove for a layup to give the Wolves a 95-91 advantage with 2:53 to go in overtime. Clyde Drexler, who had 10 points and six assists, did the same to pull the Rockets within 95-93 with two minutes remaining. But Porter converted two free throws with 70 seconds left. The Rockets closed within 97-95 when Drexler made another driving layup with 23 seconds to play. Marbury hit one free throw to push Minnesota's lead to 98-95 with 19.3 seconds remaining.

Charles Barkley, who had 11 points and 10 boards, missed a three-pointer with five seconds left and Porter hit two free throws after getting fouled while grabbing the rebound for the final margin with 2.9 seconds to play.

"Minnesota played a good game," Barkley said. "It was a hard-fought game that both teams really wanted to win. I thought we were a step slow tonight and it is a disappointing loss."

The Wolves held a 22-21 edge at the end of the first as Marbury drove for a layup with 36 seconds remaining. Houston opened the second with a 6-0 spurt for a 27-22 lead when Mario Elie sank a three-pointer with 10:18 remaining. Garnett answered with a running jumper and a 20-footer to pull Minnesota within 27-26 with 9:09 left in the second. The Rockets took a 46-44 lead into halftime when Drexler hit a running 21-footer at the buzzer.

The Rockets led throughout the third -- but never by more than six points -- until Stanley Roberts dunked to give Minnesota a 66-65 edge with 67 seconds left in the quarter. Matt Bullard, who had 14 points, hit a three-pointer at the buzzer as the Rockets took a 70-68 lead into the fourth.
