GAME RECAP

Cliff Robinson scored a team season-high 36 points as the Phoenix Suns cruised to their fourth straight win, 115-99 over the Charlotte Hornets, avenging a double-overtime defeat from last month.

Robinson, who is averaging 23.6 points over the last four games, scored eight points in a 23-5 burst early in the first quarter. He finished with 12 in the period as the Suns opened a 39-23 lead. Phoenix was in front by at least 11 points thereafter and led by as many as 23 points.

Jason Kidd tied a franchise record with 10 assists in the opening quarter and finished with 16 to go with 11 points. Antonio McDyess and Rex Chapman chipped in 14 points apiece for the Suns, who have won nine of their last 11 games.

"That was one of our better efforts all year," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "I thought our defensive intensity was excellent. It really got us in the open court, which contributed a lot to our high shooting percentage. Cliff Robinson was fantastic and I thought Jason Kidd's energy is what got us going in the game."

Hornets All-Star Glen Rice was limited to 10 points on 2-of-12 shooting after tying a season high with 42 in a 120-113 double-overtime win over Phoenix on January 27th. Matt Geiger scored 22 points and Bobby Phills came off the injured list to add 20 for the Hornets, who fell to 0-3 on their six-game road trip and have dropped five of six overall.

"They did all the damage in the first quarter and then we played pretty even with them the whole way through," Hornets coach Dave Cowens said. "They just maintained the lead from the first quarter on. They've got so many guys that they spread you out, those guys were making everything around the basket tonight."

McDyess grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Suns to a 41-28 edge on the glass. Robinson, who helped shut down Rice, shot 14-of-22 and made 7-of-8 free throws as Phoenix hit a season-best 58 percent (44-of-76) from the floor and 21-of-23 from the foul line.

"I was just trying to do a good job at being aggressive and making sure he (Rice) had to play me on the defensive end as well," Robinson said. "He had to spend a lot of energy chasing me around, and the guys keeping in mind that he's a tremendous scorer helped out when I got beat."

Phills hit a layup to open the game, but Robinson answered with a lay-in of his own to spark the huge first-quarter run. Kidd fed Robinson for a dunk before hitting a 16-footer for a 21-7 lead. Kidd handed out the last of his six assists on the run when he found Robinson for another layup to cap the spurt with 6:46 remaining.

"The credit goes to my teammates, they were getting open and it's my job to get them the ball," Kidd said. "Since the All-Star break, we've been rolling. We're trying to show we can play defense and we've putting the ball in the basket, and the fun thing is everyone is touching the ball."

The 39 points were a season high in the first quarter for the Suns, who shot 18-of-26 (69 percent) from the field in the opening 12 minutes.

Geiger's jumper pulled Charlotte within 41-30 early in the second period, but Phoenix reeled off the next eight points. Danny Manning scored half of his eight points during that stretch and his basket built the lead to 49-30 with 7:01 left before halftime.

Manning had the previous best scoring total by a Sun this season with 35 points in the quadruple-overtime win over Portland on November 14th. Kidd matched Jeff Hornacek's team record for assists in a quarter, set January 28th, 1987.

Mark Bryant and Kevin Johnson chipped in 10 points apiece for Phoenix, which trails the Lakers by a half game for second place in the Pacific Division.

Phills was activated prior to the game after missing the last five weeks with a groin injury. He finished 9-of-12 from the field and buried both of his three-pointers.

"I felt good out there tonight, however, there's nothing good about it when you come out and get a loss," Phills said. "We lost our first three games on a six-game road trip, we have to find a way to bounce back. Personally, I felt fine, but there's no gratification in a loss."

David Wesley had 11 points and Anthony Mason contributed 10 and nine rebounds for Charlotte, which never threatened in the second half and shot 48 percent (38-of-79) overall.

Dennis Scott, who the Suns acquired from the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday in exchange for Cedric Ceballos, scored five points in four minutes in his Phoenix debut.
