GAME RECAP

Stephon Marbury scored five of his 13 points in a 7-0 spurt to start the second half and Sam Mitchell led a balanced attack with 17 points as the Minnesota Timberwolves cruised to a 113-95 victory over the Sacramento Kings.

Guard Anthony Peeler scored 16 points in his Minnesota debut after being acquired from the Vancouver Grizzlies at the trade deadline, helping his new team beat Sacramento for just the second time in the last seven meetings.

Mitch Richmond scored 32 points for the Kings, who lost their second straight game after a season-high four-game winning streak. Sacramento began a pivotal five-game road trip and remained 3 1/2 games behind the Houston Rockets for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

Minnesota held a 55-50 lead at the half, helped by Tom Hammonds, who scored eight of his 11 points in the second quarter.

Stanley Roberts started the third period with an eight-footer. Marbury connected from 25 feet and capped the surge with a driving layup off the fast break to make it 62-50 with 10:14 left.

Corliss Williamson and Richmond scored around a layup by Roberts before Minnesota embarked on a 12-4 run that stretched the lead to 18 points. Marbury fed Mitchell for a driving layup to start the spurt and found Kevin Garnett on a similar pass to close it and give Minnesota a 76-58 cushion with 4:41 remaining. Peeler made a three-pointer during the run and had seven points in the period.

Sacramento got no closer than 12 points thereafter and was down by as much as 24 points late in the game.

Marbury finished with nine assists, while Garnett added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Parks added 10 boards for Timberwolves, who shot 49 percent (44-of-90) from the floor, compared to 37 percent (30-of-81) for the Kings.

Minnesota once again was without starting forward Tom Gugliotta, who is awaiting ankle surgery and out for the season. Mitchell, the starter at Gugliotta's small forward position, shot 5-of-11 from the field and added eight rebounds. He also was 7-of-10 from the foul line.

Sacramento played without starting point guard Anthony Johnson, who has a sprained right ankle, and saw Terry Dehere score five points on 1-of-6 shooting in his stead. Lawrence Funderburke was the only other King to score in double figures, notching 10 points and seven rebounds.

Richmond scored 12 points in the first quarter as Sacramento took a 30-27 lead. Terry Porter kept Minnesota close by scoring half of his 14 points in the period.
