GAME RECAP

Sixth man John Starks scored 16 of his 24 points and hit four three-pointers in a 22-5 fourth-quarter run to lift the New York Knicks to their sixth win in seven games, 92-74 over the Houston Rockets.

Through three quarters, the game was tied 14 times and the lead changed hands on 18 occasions. But the Knicks broke open the game in the fourth quarter behind Starks' hot shooting and their aggressive defense. New York scored the first nine points of the final quarter and opened a 76-66 lead after a dunk by Starks with 9:54 left.

"We're doing a better job of seeking out the best shot on each possession," said Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy.

During the run, Charles Barkley, now the sixth man for Houston, missed a jumper, forced a miss inside and had a shot blocked by Chris Mills. Barkley was 3-of-13 from the field with three turnovers and just seven points in 25 minutes. Starks, who won the Sixth Man Award last year, downplayed his head-to-head battle with Barkley.

"I wasn't making a point of it," said Starks, who was coming off a 1-of-9 shooting effort against Portland. "I needed to play well. I hadn't played particularly well the last couple games. I needed to step up my game and I did."

Houston got its first points of the fourth quarter on a dunk by Kevin Willis with 8:54 left. But Starks answered with a three-pointer before Barkley's jumper made it 79-70 with 8:18 remaining.

Starks responded with another three-pointer that triggered a 10-1 spurt. His final three-pointer of the quarter gave the Knicks an 89-71 lead with 2:42 remaining. Up to that point, the Rockets were just 2-of-13 from the field in the period.

"He's having another very, very good year," Van Gundy said of Starks. "If he doesn't win it (Sixth Man Award) he's going to be right up there."

Starks, who was 0-of-9 from three-point range in the last two games, made 6-of-9 three-pointers, including 4-of-5 in the final period.

"Obviously John Starks was cooking, but we just didn't make shots," said Barkley. "The last couple of games I have not played well."

"He shot the ball very well," added Clyde Drexler. " He came in and provided energy for them. They were flat. He was shooting right off the pick. If the big guy doesn't step out, he's wide open."

The Knicks improved to 16-11 since leading scorer Patrick Ewing went down with a season-ending wrist fracture on December 20th at Milwaukee. They were 15-11 with their All-Star center in the lineup.

The Rockets, who dropped back to the .500 mark, scored only eight points in the fourth quarter and just 31 points in the second half while shooting under 38 percent from the field. The eight points represented a season-low for a Knicks' opponent.

"I thought we defended extremely well, but they'll go back and look at film and see shots they should have made," said Van Gundy. "It's a combination."

Drexler had 16 points for the Rockets, who have lost two straight and split the season series with the Knicks for the third straight season. Hakeem Olajuwon added 13 and Eddie Johnson 10.

Larry Johnson scored 16 points and Charlie Ward 14 for the Knicks, who improved to 8-0 at home against Western Conference opponents. New York has won four straight at home and is 6-1 overall since the All-Star break.

Allan Houston scored just nine points for the Knicks. He had led the team in scoring the last five games, averaging 25 points in that span, and matched a season-high with 34 points against the Trail Blazers.
