GAME RECAP

Shaquille O'Neal scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Eddie Jones added 20 points as the Los Angeles Lakers snapped a four-game road losing streak with a 98-81 drubbing of the Milwaukee Bucks.

O'Neal and Rick Fox held off the Bucks after Ray Allen pulled Milwaukee within 49-43 early in the third quarter with a three-pointer. O'Neal answered with a lay-in and three straight free throws before Fox, who finished with 13 points, nailed a three-pointer and sank a layup, completing a 10-0 run and putting Milwaukee away for good.

It was the Lakers' seventh straight victory over the Bucks and the second of the season. Nick Van Exel had a season-high 18 assists in the first meeting, a 114-102 win on January 7th, but missed his fourth game in a row with a sore right knee.

"We did what we had to do," said O'Neal. "The Bucks are a good team and we played well without Nick."

Robert Horry netted 13 points and Elden Campbell added six and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles, which held the Bucks to 38 percent (35-of-93) shooting in posting its first road win since January 21st.

"Tonight was a very good defensive effort," Lakers coach Del Harris said. "We've adjusted our play to facilitate our defense."

Allen had 19 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds but was just 7-of-21 from the field as Milwaukee had its three-game winning streak snapped. Glenn Robinson scored 16 points but also shot poorly for the Bucks, hitting just 7-of-19 attempts.

"I think I took a lot of shots tonight," Allen conceded. "I was a little hurried and it took its toll. The Lakers play very good team defense and they rotated well."

Milwaukee never led, but pulled within 34-32 when Allen drained a shot from behind the arc with 4:51 left in the second quarter. The Lakers pulled away with a 7-0 surge as Jones sank a layup, O'Neal a short hook and Fox capped the burst with a three-pointer. The Bucks were unable to make any headway and Los Angeles held a 47-38 lead at the break.

Fox's lay-in that capped the third-quarter run came with 8:37 to go and gave the Lakers a 59-43 lead. They crafted that into a 75-58 cushion after three periods, which Milwaukee was unable to cut into.

The Bucks committed just nine turnovers but wasted a season-high 17 points by reserve Michael Curry as well as a season-best 20-rebound effort by Tyrone Hill. Milwaukee has not beaten the Lakers since November 5th, 1994.

"It was a very disappointing game. We didn't have any offense tonight, we couldn't shoot the ball in a lake," said Milwaukee coach Chris Ford. "Michael Curry was the only one with a hot hand."

Los Angeles, which had lost four of its last five games, took over second place from the Phoenix Suns in the Pacific Division, four games behind the Seattle SuperSonics. The Suns lost to Philadelphia.
