GAME RECAP

Isaiah Rider made a clutch three-pointer and two free throws in the final minute as the Portland Trail Blazers held on for a 106-101 victory over the Chicago Bulls, who suffered just their third home loss of the season.

Damon Stoudamire had 24 points and 11 assists and Rider scored 22 points for the Trail Blazers, who blew a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter but recovered with clutch shooting down the stretch. Arvydas Sabonis had 21 points and 20 rebounds.

A free throw by Michael Jordan, who scored 15 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter, pulled the Bulls within 95-93 with one minute to go. But Rider made a three-pointer with 41 seconds left and, after Jordan missed a 16-footer, sank two free throws with 32 seconds left to extend the lead to seven points. It was a two-possession game thereafter.

"I don't think that we stole the game tonight," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We played well on both ends of the court and earned the victory. We kept it together when they made their run in the fourth quarter. It shows that this team is growing and maturing."

Scott Burrell scored seven of his 15 points in a fourth-period surge for the Bulls, whose season-high eight-game winning streak came to an end. Chicago's league-best home mark fell to 26-3, after the Bulls had gone 39-2 at the United Center in each of the last two seasons.

"We were worried about Portland tonight and it was obviously warranted," Chicago coach Phil Jacskon said. "They played very well and shot very well on our court. We had a nice run in the last quarter but they hit some big shots and kept their composer to defeat us."

Two free throws by Rasheed Wallace gave the Blazers a 79-65 lead with 11:26 to play before the Bulls roared to the lead with a 21-6 run. Jordan and Burrell each scored seven points in the burst and a dunk by Luc Longley gave Chicago an 86-85 edge with 4:08 remaining.

Stoudamire responded with a basket and a free throw by Brian Grant extended the lead to 90-88 before Dennis Rodman tied it for the last time with a layup with 2:11 to go. Wallace made a three-pointer with 1:48 remaining, giving Portland the lead for good.

"The key to beating any great team like the Bulls is to play great defense," Sabonis said. "The win was an important one for us as a team. It shows everyone on our team that we can play with anybody."

Jordan made two free throws, but Sabonis had a layup with 1:13 to go. Jordan was fouled by Sabonis but missed the first shot before cutting the deficit to two points.

Wallace scored 11 points and Augmon added 10 for the Blazers, who shot 51 percent (36-of-70) from the field and held a 41-36 rebounding advantage. Portland was 9-of-19 from behind the arc.

Longley scored 14 points and Rodman grabbed 14 rebounds for the Bulls, who shot 41 percent (36-of-88) and made just 5-of-20 three-pointers. Scottie Pippen scored 12 points on just 5-of-14 shooting and Jordan was 9-of-26 from the field, although he did make 15-of-17 foul shots.

"Give them credit, they played extremely well," Jordan said. "They wanted it more than we did. We didn't make any shots. Sabonis got out of the box early and helped control the tempo of the game. It was tough to get accustomed to a Western Conference team. They played an up-tempo game and when someone else controls the tempo we're in trouble. No excuses, Portland just beat us."

Two free throws by Longley cut the deficit to 70-63 with 1:06 to go in the third quarter, but three-pointers from Stoudamire and Rider and two foul shots by Stoudamire closed the period and gave the Blazers a 78-63 lead.

Sabonis scored 12 points in the first quarter as Portland built a 25-21 advantage. Chicago trailed by nine points in the second period before closing to 47-44 at halftime.
