GAME RECAP

Shaquille O'Neal had 24 points and nine rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers won in Indiana for the first time in more than four years with a 96-89 victory over the Pacers.

Eddie Jones and Derek Fisher each added 20 points for Los Angeles, which snapped a three-game skid at Indiana dating to November 26th, 1993. The 20 points were one shy of Fisher's career best, set against the Dallas Mavericks on April 6th, 1997.

"We just wanted to stay above .500 on the road," said O'Neal, as Los Angeles improved to 16-9 away from home. "I just wanted to come out and play. Rik (Smits) is a great player. I've had some wars with him in Orlando. We had an all-around solid game. Lately, we've let a couple of games slip away. Right now we are concentrating on getting the number one spot and homecourt."

"I'm not going to take credit for this one," Fisher said. "I just try to come out and play hard. I'm not a big stats guy. I'm just worried about winning games."

Smits scored 19 points and Mark Jackson added 18 and eight assists for the Pacers, who shot just 36 percent (32-for-89) from the field. Dale Davis recorded 14 points and 16 rebounds for Indiana (38-17), which was trying to match its win total from last season.

"We want to forget this one and move on," Smits said. "Tomorrow will be a better day. We hope the others (bench) will step up as they have in the past. We got good looks but we didn't hit our shots."

O'Neal had eight points in the first period as the Lakers shot 52 percent (12-for-23) from the floor and took a 26-17 lead. Rick Fox, who had 10 points, hit a three-pointer to cap an 18-4 burst and give the Lakers their biggest lead, 36-18, with 8:57 left in the second quarter.

Derrick McKey hit a layup to spark a 21-4 burst that pulled the Pacers within 40-39 when Smits completed a three-point play with 2:59 left in the second. Jones answered with a layup, giving the Lakers a 42-39 lead with 2:47 to go in the second. Smits, who made just 7-of-23 shots, hit a layup to cut the deficit to 44-43 with 2:02 remaining in the second. Jones responded again, hitting a three-pointer to make it 47-43 with 1:33 to play in the second.

Davis opened the third with a layup, cutting the deficit to 51-47. But Los Angeles went on a 9-3 run to take a 60-50 lead on Robert Horry's hook shot with 9:40 to go in the third. The Lakers stretched the lead to 71-56 when O'Neal hit a free throw with 4:43 remaining in the third.

Chris Mullin, who had 12 points, hit a three-pointer to cap a 9-2 surge and pull the Pacers within 74-70 with 21 seconds to play in the third.

Reggie Miller, who hit just 4-of-17 shots from the field, made a free throw to pull the Pacers within 76-73, 49 seconds into the fourth. But the Lakers responded with eight straight points, taking an 84-73 lead when O'Neal made a 10-foot hook shot with 7:37 to play.

"We got a hand in Reggie's face a lot," Fisher said. "We know we can't stop him, but we just tried to control him. I'm just trying to show this organization that I can get the job done."

Indiana managed to close within 90-86 on Jackson's running jumper with 2:57 left. After each team turned the ball over on successive possessions, O'Neal missed two free throws with 2:10 to play. Fisher then hit a 21-footer for a 92-86 margin with 59 seconds left.
