GAME RECAP

Maurice Taylor's three-point play capped a decisive fourth-quarter run and Eric Piatkowski scored a career-high 27 points as the Los Angeles Clippers moved Bill Fitch into second place on the all-time coaching win list with a 117-108 victory over Philadelphia 76ers.

Piatkowski had 24 points in the second half for the Clippers, who snapped a seven-game losing streak and beat an Eastern Conference opponent at home for the first time in 12 games this season.

The victory was the 939th for Fitch, who had been tied since February 3rd with Hall of Famer Red Auerbach for second place behind Lenny Wilkens.

"If I had to have a quote about that (Auerbach) it would be that it is good company," said a reserved Fitch.

Ike Austin added 19 points and 12 rebounds for Los Angeles, which broke open a tight contest with a 10-2 run over the final 3:28.

"I thought we played hard and executed well during the whole game," said Austin. "The guys who came off the bench played well. That's what we need every night. We need to learn how to control the game once we get the lead."

Derrick Coleman tied a season high with 25 points and Brian Shaw established a season-best with 24 as Philadelphia fell to 1-12 in the back end of games on consecutive nights.

"The Clippers played great tonight," said 76ers coach Larry Brown. "Their offense executed and moved the ball well. We had a tough time guarding them because of the matchup problems for us."

A 12-footer by Joe Smith with 9:14 left in the contest knotted the game at 81. But Taylor, who scored 11 of his points in the final quarter, began to take over. He had a steal and layup to give the Clippers a lead they would not relinquish.

Taylor then drained a 20-footer to push the lead to 85-81. Smith countered with a dunk for Philadelphia but Piatkowski had a basket to regain the four-point bulge. Taylor buried a nine-footer with 6:17 to go but Smith answered with an 18-footer to draw the 76ers within 89-85.

Piatkowski hit a three-pointer to push the lead to seven but Philadelphia didn't fold, battling back to within 94-91. But Taylor sparked the pivotal run with a layup with 3:28 remaining.

Coleman, who was 7-of-8 from the free throw line, was fouled and missed both attempts. Darrick Martin made the 76ers pay by draining a long three-pointer at the other end for a 99-91 cushion with 2:30 left. Shaw countered with a jumper for the 76ers but Austin grabbed an offensive rebound and put back the miss with 1:47 to play. Taylor then capped the spurt with his three-point play with 81 seconds remaining.

"They're a hard team to defend against," said Smith. "They have a point guard coming down on the break pulling up and hitting three's. And they have a big man on the inside who can score now."

The Clippers won for just the second time in 23 games against the Eastern Conference and snapped a six-game home losing streak. Los Angeles also held a sizeable edge at the free throw line, making 35-of-41 to the 76ers' 15-of-25.
