GAME RECAP

Allan Houston scored 19 points and recent arrival Terry Cummings added 18 to lead seven players in double figures as the New York Knicks defeated the Milwaukee Bucks, 102-90, avoiding a sweep of the four-game season series.

Chris Mills also scored 18 points and Charlie Ward had 10 assists for the Knicks, who bounced back from a terrible 87-82 home loss to Golden State on Tuesday and improved to 20-7 at Madison Square Garden.

The Bucks have been a thorn in the side of the Knicks, having won the first three meetings, including a 98-78 home win on December 20th in which Knicks All-Star center Patrick Ewing suffered a dislocated wrist and was lost for the season.

Cummings, acquired one week ago in a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers, was pressed into extended duty when center Chris Dudley suffered a broken foot on Tuesday. His points were his first as a member of the Knicks.

"I'm just happy we won more than anything else," Cummings said. "The first three games I was just trying to figure out what was going on. I just wanted to come in and be positive, fit in and not mess up. I haven't touched the ball in a long time and my rhythm has been feeling a little bit funny, but today it felt pretty good."

Glenn Robinson and Ray Allen each scored 26 points for the Bucks, who had won their last four games against the Knicks. Milwaukee also had won five of its previous seven road games. Allen also had 10 rebounds and five assists and Tyrone Hill had 15 boards.

"Our defense wasn't that good tonight," Milwaukee coach Chris Ford said. "Ray and Glenn were able to knock down their shots, but we never mounted a defense to stop them. Their two new guys, Brooks Thompson and Terry Cummings, killed us. I guess that was the magic ingredient that they've added to their mix.

"We just didn't have the intensity we needed to win tonight. We certainly know how important these games are. We have a five-day break now but then we have to get back and get ready for the remainder of the season."

Milwaukee outrebounded New York 40-27 and shot 48 percent (34-for-71) from the field. But New York shot 53 percent (39-for-74) and was 7-for-17 on three-pointers.

The Knicks were down 18-15 in the first quarter after Allen hit a jumper, but they reeled off a 13-2 run over the last 3:24 of the quarter to take the lead for good. Mills opened the spurt with a three-pointer and Houston finished it off with a layup with 2.9 seconds left to give the Knicks a 28-20 lead.

Robinson opened the second quarter with a jumper to pull the Bucks within 28-22, but the Knicks' second unit expanded the lead with a 12-2 burst. Thompson had five points during the run with a jumper, free throw and a three-point play on a drive, and John Starks connected on a three-pointer to finish it off, making it 40-24 at the 9:02 mark.

"I was coming in just trying to make sure the team didn't miss a step and spell Charlie to let him get a rest," Thompson said. "Things went well and I'm thankful for it. These guys have been great in helping me out with learning the offensive system. The players are great and they just made it easy on me."

A pair of free throws by Litterial Green with 2:30 left in the first half capped off a 7-0 spurt to cut New York's lead to 51-39, but the Knicks built their lead to 57-44 at intermission, led by Starks' 11 points.

New York's biggest lead of the second half was 73-51 with 5:57 left in the third quarter, following a tip-in by Houston.

"I think we played with defensive urgency," Houston said. "There were times when they made runs, but we had guys hit shots for us and we remained focused and passionate on the defensive end. We had guys come in a do a good job for us, especially Brooks and Cummings. That's what it's all about."

The closest the Bucks got in the second half was 82-72, at 8:57 of the fourth quarter off a steal and layup by Elliot Perry.
