GAME RECAP

Hakeem Olajuwon scored half of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, the last of which gave him 24,000 for his career, as the Houston Rockets pulled away for a 118-98 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Olajuwon became the 12th player in league history to reach 24,000 points when he hit his trademark fallaway jumper along the baseline with 3:06 to play for a 113-88 cushion.

Olajuwon, who played in his 1,000th career game on Tuesday, did not know that he had reached a personal milestone.

When told of the news, Olajuwon responded, "That's nice. I knew I played in 1,000 games, but I wasn't aware of the 24,000 points."

Kevin Willis scored nine of his 15 points in the decisive third quarter as Houston rebounded from an 0-3 road trip to win its fourth straight home game. Charles Barkley contributed 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Rockets, who had eight players score in double figures.

"We played well tonight, but we should beat them at home," Barkley said. "We played terribly the entire road trip, so this is a great win for us. We've got to build some sort of momentum from it."

Stephon Marbury and Stanley Roberts scored 16 points apiece to pace Minnesota, which has lost four of its last six games. The Timberwolves, swept by Houston in the first round of last year's playoffs, had won the first two meetings this season, both in overtime.

The biggest difference was from three-point range, where Houston buried 12-of-27 and Minnesota made only 1-of-10. Matt Maloney, Eddie Johnson and Brent Price drained three three-pointers apiece and Matt Bullard added a pair. Maloney finished with 15 points, while Johnson and Price came off the bench for 13 and 11, respectively.

"The difference was that we didn't execute and they did," said Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders. "They had their inside-outside game going and that makes it extremely tough. They hit a lot of big threes tonight."

Maloney's three-pointer midway through the opening period gave Houston the lead for good, 13-12. The Rockets held a 23-19 edge after one period.

The Timberwolves were unable to get on track, but were within 45-38 on a dunk by Tom Hammonds with 4:21 left in the second quarter. But Houston finished the period with a 12-5 run, sparked by another three-pointer by Maloney and capped by Olajuwon's 15-footer just 21 seconds before halftime for a 57-43 lead.

Marbury's runner trimmed the deficit to 59-49 with 9:56 left in the third quarter, but Houston reeled off six straight points. Olajuwon's steal led to a fast-break dunk by Willis, who followed that with a 15-foot jumper. Another steal by Olajuwon led to Clyde Drexler's layup, forcing Minnesota to call timeout and building Houston's lead to 65-49.

"We have to stay within ourselves," Olajuwon said. "When we play together, it's easier to win. We seem to win two or three games and forget about that. We need to do that all the time."

Olajuwon's 14-footer increased the advantage to 17 points midway through the final period before Johnson scored four points during an 8-0 spurt, which pushed the lead to 102-80. Houston grabbed its biggest lead on a three-pointer by Price with 1:13 to play, making it 118-92.

Drexler chipped in 13 points and Bullard added 11 for Houston, which turned it over just eight times while scoring 25 points off 16 Minnesota turnovers.

"We played a very sound game tonight," explained Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "We only had eight turnovers and we played good defense and took away their easy baskets. Our three-point shooting was great."

Kevin Garnett had 13 points and seven boards and Terry Porter added 12 points for the Timberwolves. Marbury had five assists but also committed five turnovers while Roberts shot 7-of-10 from the field and grabbed 10 rebounds.

"Tonight we made a lot of mental mistakes and they keyed on that," Garnett said. "They also hit a lot of threes and that pretty much sums it up. They make you pay for the mental mistakes."
