GAME RECAP

Jerome Williams completed a 17-point, 12-rebound performance with three key plays down the stretch as the Detroit Pistons rallied for a 90-87 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Brian Williams also scored 17 points for the Pistons, who won for only the third time in their last eight games. Detroit entered the contest a season-worst five games under .500 before defeating Cleveland for the ninth time in the last 11 meetings at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Shawn Kemp collected 26 points and 11 rebounds and Cedric Henderson added 13 points for the Cavaliers, who have lost six of their last eight games and fell to 6-12 against Central Division foes.

"It's good to beat a team that's fighting for the playoffs," Detroit forward Grant Hill said. "We stole that one tonight. Jerome was huge tonight. He did not have one offensive play run for him, he was just active. He was excellent tonight."

Cleveland had an 80-73 lead after Carl Thomas buried a three-pointer with 8:50 left in the fourth quarter. But Jerome Williams converted a three-point play and Lindsey Hunter nailed a three-pointer before Hill sank two free throws at the end of a 12-3 spurt, giving Detroit an 85-83 lead with 3:55 to go.

Kemp had a pair of buckets around Hill's drive to the basket as the Cavaliers tied it for the final time at 87-87 with 2:27 to play. Jerome Williams dunked 17 seconds later to give the Pistons the lead for good.

Jerome Williams then made two key defensive plays to protect the lead. Kemp drove to the basket with 26 seconds left, but Jerome Williams got his hand on the ball as Kemp was about to shoot. Kemp got the ball back and went up with it, but Jerome Williams blocked his shot and Detroit gained possession.

Hill was fouled with 12 seconds left and hit one free throw to make it 90-87. The Cavaliers tried to work a three-point shot for Wesley Person, but he was unable to get it off and instead passed to Thomas, who did not hit the rim on his attempt as time expired.

"I had a moment where I thought I could take the shot," Person said. "But I lost the moment, he recovered and I passed the ball off. In that situation, I've got to find a way to get the ball up in the air."

The Cavaliers led by one after the first quarter before Henderson and Vitaly Potapenko scored five points each in a 22-8 spurt during the second period that extended their cushion to 49-38 with 1:30 left in the half. Cleveland led 51-40 at the half.

Detroit rallied in the third. Jerome Williams scored six points in a 15-3 burst as the Pistons closed within 65-64 on Jerry Stackhouse's free throw with 1:48 remaining in the period. The Cavs brought a 70-67 advantage into the final period.

"We gave up 19 and 17 (points) in the third and fourth quarters and that is great," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "But we have to do better in the first quarter. We have to start setting the tone in the first quarter."

Hunter finished with 16 points and Hill had 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Pistons, who shot 42.5 percent (31-of-73) from the field but held a 45-34 rebounding advantage.

Potapenko had 12 points, Zydrunas Ilgauskas 11 and Thomas 10 for the Cavaliers, who shot 41 percent (31-of-75).
