GAME RECAP

Alonzo Mourning had 28 points and 14 rebounds and the Miami Heat used their trademark defense and rough stuff to overcome a 20-point deficit for a pivotal 95-93 victory over the New Jersey Nets, their ninth straight triumph.

Voshon Lenard scored 19 points, including two clutch jumpers down the stretch, for the Heat, who trailed by 15 points in the fourth quarter but held the Nets without a basket for more than six minutes.

Miami won despite the ejections of All-Star guard Tim Hardaway for arguing in the third quarter and defensive specialist Keith Askins for a flagrant foul in the fourth period and built its lead over New Jersey to seven games in the Atlantic Division. The teams meet again in Miami on Sunday night.

"I don't know our approach to the game was any different than any other game," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We just started to play in the fourth quarter. They missed a couple of shots toward the end and we capitalized off those misses. They missed six or seven shots in a row and that put us in a good position."

"We must start the game tomorrow the way we ended the game today," said Mourning, who was 10-of-15 from the field.

Kendall Gill scored 22 points and Sam Cassell added 19 for the Nets, who led by 20 points with less than 17 minutes to go but managed just 15 points in the fourth quarter and lost to Miami for the ninth time in the last 11 meetings.

"They are a terrific team," Nets coach John Calipari said. "We're going to go down there and try to play the same way, with a high energy level. It was a dissapointing loss, believe me. But you've just got to bounce back."

A layup by Gill gave the Nets an 82-72 lead with 7:29 remaining, but New Jersey was held without a basket for the ensuing 6:26.

Less than a minute later, Askins practically tackled Keith Van Horn on a fast break before Nets guard Sherman Douglas answered by shoving Askins to the floor. Askins was whistled for a flagrant-2 foul and ejected, and Van Horn's two free throws made it 86-76.

"I'm definitely surprised by Keith's actions," Douglas said. "He took a very hard foul. We have to defend ourselves and each other. Everything was justified. He got his flagrant and I got my technical."

"I don't think I did that much damage to him," Askins said. "I wasn't trying to hurt him. I was just trying to make an aggressive play on the ball to prevent the basket. I didn't mean any harm to him or his teammates. The retaliation by Sherman was more harmful than my actions."

But Miami rallied behind Mourning, Lenard and Mark Strickland. Eric Murdock made two free throws and Strickland scored in the lane to make it 86-80 with 5:17 left. After a free throw by Jayson Williams, Mourning made two free throws, Lenard buried a three-pointer and Strickland had a follow dunk that tied it at 87-87 with 2:42 remaining. Lenard made just one three-pointer in six tries.

"The game is not over until the final second ticks off the clock," Mourning said. "When we were down, we continued to scrap and to make plays. ... We gradually cut the lead down, and didn't worry about the clock."

"We didn't show up in the fourth quarter," Cassell said. "We weren't aggressive. Their press hurt us. They got to all the loose balls and tip-ins.

Mourning's follow shot gave Miami the lead for good and Lenard hit a 17-footer to cap a 15-1 spurt at 91-87 with 1:34 to go. A follow shot by Kerry Kittles and Mourning's two free throws kept the margin at four points before Van Horn, who was 4-of-19 from the field, sank a jumper that made it 93-91 with 32 seconds left.

Van Horn made a steal and looked ahead to Gill but threw away the pass, forcing the Nets to foul. Murdock sank the clinching free throws with 5.5 seconds left. New Jersey shot 5-of-21 and had no assists and six turnovers in the final period.

"We could not get an easy basket down the stretch," Calipari said. "We missed a bunch of shots late in the game."

Former Net P.J. Brown scored 17 points and Murdocck added 10 on 8-of-8 from the line for Miami, which shot 46 percent (32-of-69) from the field, although just 3-of-17 from three-point range. Murdock handed out six assists and Strickland scored six of his eight points in the final period.

Kittles scored 16 points, Van Horn added 13 and Williams grabbed 15 rebounds for the Nets, who shot 42 percent (36-of-86) and made 2-of-9 three-pointers. New Jersey was outrebounded, 43-41.

"Tomorrow, we have to put ourselves in position to win the ballgame like they did today," Cassell said. "They're the hottest team in the league and they showed it."

Hardaway had seven points and seven assists when he was ejected with 4:51 left in the third quarter for arguing a foul call against him. Cassell made both technical foul shots and Gill sank a free throw, giving the Nets their largest lead at 71-51.

The eighth sellout of the season at Continental Airlines Arena saw the Nets use a 13-4 surge to close the first quarter and take a 33-23 lead. Chris Gatling scored four of his 13 points in the burst and Kittles added four.

Miami still was within 40-30 after Brown's 17-footer with 6:44 left in the second quarter, but Lucious Harris made a jumper, Gatling scored inside, Cassell made two free throws and fed Van Horn for a dunk that gave New Jersey a 48-30 bulge with 4:34 to go in the first half.

Dunks by Mourning and Strickland closed the half and pulled the Heat within 52-40. It was an awful 24 minutes for Miami, which shot under 40 percent (15-of-38) and committed 13 turnovers.
