GAME RECAP

Voshon Lenard scored 27 points, including two free throws with nine-tenths of a second remaining that gave the Miami Heat their 10th straight victory, an 85-84 triumph over the New Jersey Nets and a sweep of the home-and-home series.

Lenard, who was 5-of-10 from three-point range but shot a pair of airballs in the final minute, took a pass from a driving Tim Hardaway underneath the basket and was hit in the mouth by Nets center Jayson Williams, who fouled out.

Lenard calmly sank both free throws and Kerry Kittles missed everything on a last-second shot for the Nets, who dropped eight games behind first-place Miami in the Atlantic Division.

The victory was the 900th of Miami coach Pat Riley's career.

"It's not much, it's just a number," Riley said. "I've been around 17 years and been fortunate to coach three good teams. When you do that, the numbers pile up. I know our guys are totally exhausted."

Former Net P.J. Brown had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Mark Strickland added 14 points for the Heat, who lead second-place New York by 6 1/2 games and are one shy of the longest winning streak in franchise history, set from January 27th-February 20th, 1997.

It was another tough loss for New Jersey, which blew a 20-point lead to Miami at home on Saturday in a 95-93 setback. The Nets limited Heat leading scorers Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning to a combined 14 points and erased a pair of five-point deficits in the final five-plus minutes but lost for the fifth time in seven games.

"They played hard and I didn't expect anything less," Brown said. "It was a great all-around game. It was a bigger win tonight than yesterday because its hard to beat a team two times in a row back-to-back."

In the games against Miami, New Jersey shot a combined 12-of-42 in the fourth quarter, including 7-of-21 tonight.

New Jersey took its only lead of the fourth quarter when Sam Cassell found Williams with an alley-oop pass for a lay-in with 8.4 seconds left. Cassell had 14 points and 12 assists and Williams finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Nets trailed 78-73 with 5 1/2 minutes to go, but rallied behind Kittles, who scored 17 points. His three-pointer and jumper tied it with 4:16 remaining.

But Miami's Dan Majerle answered with a three-pointer and both teams went scoreless for more than two minutes until a jumper by Eric Murdock gave the Heat an 83-78 lead with 1:55 left.

Then Cassell took charge. He had a basket with 1:32 left and added a pair of free throws 31 seconds later to cut the deficit to 83-82. But he missed a jumper between Lenard's airballs, setting up the finish.

Keith Van Horn scored 22 points and Kendall Gill added 15 and 11 rebounds for the Nets, who shot 36 percent (32-of-89) from the field, including 2-of-11 from three-point range. They held a 50-40 rebounding edge but got just four points from their bench.

"Everybody thought we were going to get buried today," Nets coach John Calipari said. "They thought we wouldn't show up. We came to play and we had a great chance to win the game. We had one guy shoot the ball awful (Cassell 2-of-19) but we were right there."

Mourning had six points and 13 rebounds and Hardaway added eight points and nine assists for the Heat, who shot 43 percent (32-of-74) and made 7-of-18 from behind the arc. Mourning and Hardaway shot a combined 5-of-22.

With swingman Keith Askins suspended two games for his flagrant foul against Van Horn on Saturday, the Heat used a season-low seven players.

Gill and Van Horn scored nine points each as the Nets raced to a 26-19 lead after one quarter. Their 50-42 halftime lead was their biggest of the game.

But the Heat opened the third quarter with an 11-4 run. Brown scored six points, including a dunk with 6:25 to go that cut the deficit to 54-53. The score was tied 65-65 entering the fourth quarter.
