GAME RECAP

Antoine Walker's free throw with 5.4 seconds left snapped a tie and former Trail Blazer Kenny Anderson added 18 points as the Boston Celtics won their third straight game, edging Portland, 102-101.

Boston led 99-91 with 67 seconds left but the Trail Blazers battled back. Damon Stoudamire made a free throw but missed the second. Brian Grant grabbed the offensive board and put it home and was fouled. He converted the free throw to draw Portland within 98-95 with 1:03 remaining.

Dana Barros and Walker hit one free throw apiece in a span of six seconds to push the lead to 100-95, but Isaiah Rider buried a wild three-pointer from the right wing to cut the deficit to two with 26 seconds left.

Anderson made 1-of-2 from the line with 24 seconds to go and Walt Williams made the Celtics pay when he buried a three-pointer from the right corner with 13.3 seconds left, tying the game.

The Celtics pushed the ball upcourt and Walker broke free just past halfcourt. Rasheed Wallace reached out and committed his sixth foul, sending Walker to the line.

"It was just a misunderstanding, I thought we were down one and needed the ball," said Wallace.

Wallace later changed his account of what happened.

"He didn't make a foul shot all night," recanted Wallace. "I didn't think we were down. J.R. (actually Williams) hit the three and we were trapping him (Walker). I thought he would miss both of them. I still gave us an opportunity to win it. Antoine hit about two (free throws) all night. I thought the chances of us winning it would be better if he went to the line."

After missing badly on the first one, Walker caught the front and back iron before his second attempt fell through for a 102-101 lead. Stoudamire took the inbounds pass and raced into the frontcourt where his runner caught the back of the rim and bounced out as time expired.

Walker, who was 6-of-10 from the line, finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Following Stoudamire's miss, Walker jumped up on the scorer's table and pumped his fist in the air.

"I am always emotional after a victory," Walker said. "Every win in our situation is important. But this is the NBA and you have to remember that teams go into stretches, hot and cold. I don't know why Rasheed fouled me. I know I didn't tell him to. I'll take the free throw."

Boston led 57-56 with 6:56 to go in the third quarter but Greg Minor hit a jumper to spark a 28-4 burst that left Boston ahead 85-60 with just over 10 minutes left in regulation. Anderson capped the run with a three-pointer. But Portland, which scored 43 points in the fourth quarter, outscored the Celtics 37-17 the rest of the way.

"I am very pleased with the victory and very unhappy with the execution both offensively and defensively in the fourth quarter," said Celtics coach Rick Pitino. "We failed to make the correct plays but will take the victory. Give them credit for fighting back in a game we were in control of. It's a good lesson for a young team -- the game is never over."

Rider scored 24 points off the bench and Arvydas Sabonis had 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Grant finished with 21 points and seven rebounds.

"After what happened the other night (124-59 loss to Indiana) and how we got down in the fourth quarter, it was very encouraging to see how we executed down the stretch," said Trail Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy. "I guess there was a misunderstanding, Rasheed thought we were down. It was tough to lose after we worked so hard to get back into the game."

Grant and Sabonis combined to shoot 18-of-27 from the field, but the rest of the team was 16-of-59. Portland also committed 22 turnovers and was 5-of-19 from three-point range.
