GAME RECAP

Shawn Kemp scored 28 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 17 and 13 rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers continued their home mastery of the Golden State Warriors with a 102-82 victory.

Kemp had 14 points in the third period, when the Cavaliers extended their four-point halftime lead by outscoring the Warriors, 34-24. Bob Sura had five of his 10 assists in the third and Cleveland shot 80 percent (12-for-15) from the floor in the quarter. Kemp hit 10-of-16 shots from the field and made all eight of his free-throw attempts.

"We haven't been playing too well at home," said Kemp as Cleveland won its second straight home game following a three-game losing streak at Gund Arena. "I usually look up at the scoreboard but I didn't in the third quarter, because I didn't feel they were making a big run at us."

Wesley Person contributed 13 points for the Cavaliers, who have won seven straight home meetings against the Warriors since a 110-108 loss on November 28th, 1990. Cleveland improved to 17-0 this season when scoring at least 100 points and defeated Golden State for the 12th time in the last 13 meetings overall.

Jim Jackson scored 18 points and Clarence Weatherspoon added 17 for the Warriors, who have lost their last three games by a combined 76 points after beginning a five-game road trip with an impressive 87-82 win at New York. Golden State is 0-27 when allowing opponents to reach the century mark.

"In the third quarter we gave up 30-something points and it just seemed like they pounded us on the boards, particularly in the second half," said Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo. "They had a lot of possessions where they had two or three looks at the basket and I think we kind of took our struggling on the offensive end back on defense. We just got killed in the third quarter when they opened it up so much. We're not going to beat a good team playing only 30 minutes."

Donyell Marshall, who had 10 points, capped a fast break with a dunk to pull the Warriors within 57-56 with 9:18 to go in the third. But Kemp answered with a pair of free throws, Brevin Knight followed with a 17-footer and Ilgauskas added two more free throws to push Cleveland's lead to 63-56 with 7:40 left in the third. Felton Spencer, who had five points off the bench, cut Cleveland's lead to 65-62 with 5:53 remaining in the third. But Golden State came no closer as two more free throws by Kemp made it 67-62, 14 seconds later.

Cleveland held an 84-70 lead after three quarters and began the fourth period with a 14-6 run. Carl Thomas had five of his seven points in the run that ended with Knight's jumper, giving the Cavaliers their biggest lead of the game at 98-76 with 3:25 to play.

"It was an excellent second half for us," said Cleveland coach Mike Fratello. "The biggest thing was we got on the glass after being down nine rebounds at the half. This was Golden State's fourth game in six nights. They come to play and they play tough. If you let them hang around you've got a problem. We were fortunate and we got our defensive stops. Kemp came out in the second half and was terrific."

Cleveland went ahead for good, 10-9, when rookie Cedric Henderson hit a jumper in the midst of a 12-2 first-quarter burst. Henderson, who had 12 points, capped the run with a jumper for a an 18-11 lead with 3:07 remaining in the first. Kemp had 10 points in the first as Cleveland held a 24-21 advantage.

The Warriors closed within one point three times in the second quarter. Jackson hit a layup off a pass from Muggsy Bogues to make it 45-44 with 1:49 left in the second. Person, who made just 3-of-10 shots, hit a three-pointer for a 48-44 advantage with 1:35 left in the first half. Jackson's 10-footer cut the deficit to 48-46, 12 seconds later. But Henderson made a layup 2.7 seconds before halftime to give the Cavaliers a 50-46 lead at the break.
