GAME RECAP

Matt Geiger scored a career-high 29 points in just 29 minutes as the Charlotte Hornets -- without any help from Glen Rice -- picked up their fifth consecutive victory, a 112-83 rout of the Golden State Warriors.

Bobby Phills added 16 points and Anthony Mason contributed 11 rebounds and seven assists for Charlotte, which has won five straight games on three occasions this season. The Hornets have won eight of their last 11 home games.

"We have a good thing going right now," said Geiger. "When we play really good team defense, I feel we will win any game we play. We get that and good ball movement, we'll be fine."

Rice, an All-Star averaging 22.8 points per game, was held to just nine points, snapping his streak of 135 straight games in double figures.

Golden State led 15-6 after Clarence Weatherspoon converted two free throws with 7:32 remaining in the first quarter. But the Hornets immediately took control as Geiger tallied nine points in an 18-0 run, capped on Phills' tip-in with 3:34 to play in the period.

Jim Jackson scored 24 points for the Warriors, who put up just 10 points in the second quarter, their lowest output in a period this season.

"We had high expectations coming into tonight's game," said Jackson. "The first couple of minutes, we competed with the Hornets. However, a team like Charlotte can take you out of a ballgame early and that's what they did tonight. We must come out and play with more intensity and play better defense."

The Warriors came within 10 points several times over the next five minutes, the final time coming at 33-23 with 10:47 to play in the second quarter. Led by Phills, who scored the next five points, Charlotte ran off eight in a row to take a 41-23 lead with 7:38 to play before the break.

Phills hit a jumper and added a three-point play for the 15-point bulge. Vlade Divac, who totaled 10 points and 10 rebounds, added a layup and J.R. Reid ended the run with a free throw.

Golden State mounted one final charge, cutting the deficit to 51-39 on Erick Dampier's dunk with 9:58 left in the third quarter. But Geiger, who would not play at all in the fourth quarter, nailed a jumper and the Warriors never came within 12 points again.

"Matt Geiger had an exceptional game," said Hornets coach Dave Cowens. "Once he makes his first basket, he is a different player. He's also doing a lot of little things well such as defending the pick-and-roll and talking on defense. He seems to have really settled down as a player and gives us such a tough presence on the floor."

Weatherspoon scored 14 points and Dampier added 11 for the Warriors, who shot 42 percent (31-of-74) and committed 19 turnovers en route to their fourth straight loss. They finished their five-game road trip at 1-4.

Charlotte, which turned Golden State's turnovers into 21 points, shot 52 percent (45-of-86) and held a dominating 47-35 edge on the boards.

"We wanted to make a statement early tonight," said Rice. "Everyone was on the same page and it showed. Tonight was a great team effort and I was glad to see it."

Former Hornet Muggsy Bogues scored six points while handing out three assists for the Warriors, who have lost eight of the last 12 meetings between the teams.
