GAME RECAP

Anthony Mason scored 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Hornets to their season-high sixth straight victory, 112-102 over the Minnesota Timberwolves, who remained winless in Charlotte.

Glen Rice overcame a poor shooting performance to score 22 points, Bobby Phills added 21 and Matt Geiger added 15 and 12 rebounds for the Hornets, whose six-game winning streak is their longest since a nine-game run April 2nd-16th, 1997.

Rice was just 4-for-13 from the field but 12-of-12 from the line. Phills made 8-of-11 shots for Charlotte, which has won nine of its last 12 home games.

"Minnesota had two spurts, one in the first half and one in the second when they made a bunch of shots in a row," Charlotte coahc Dave Cowens said. "We tightened the screws late in the game and started switching more aggressively and battling people.

"Mason made some good moves and some good decisions late in the game. We're starting to become a little more consistent and that's what we're looking for."

Stephon Marbury and Anthony Peeler scored 20 points apiece and Kevin Garnett added 19 and nine rebounds and nine assists for the Timberwolves, who dropped to 0-10 all-time in Charlotte.

Minnesota has lost five of its last six overall and five in a row on the road.

"We made some plays and executed our halfcourt offense, but we still have some things to work on," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "Geiger hurt us tonight by making some big plays. There were plays we needed to make and didn't get. SO we've got to go home and take care of things now."

The teams shot an identical 53 percent from the field, with the Timberwolves hitting 39-of-73 shots and the Hornets 37-of-70. But Charlotte had a 42-28 edge on the boards.

"Mason hit some big shots tonight," Garnett said. "We worked hard to contain him but couldn't. When we play hard we always have a chance. We just couldn't pull off the win here in Charlotte. When it comes to stats, I don't really care unless we're winning."

After a jumper by Garnett gave Minnesota a 91-87 lead with 7:45 remaining, Charlotte went on a 10-0 run to take control of the game.

A layup by Mason, who had six points during the spurt, started off the Hornets' rally. Geiger's layup at 6:26 gave Charlotte the lead for good, 93-91, and Mason capped the burst with a free throw at the 4:50 mark to make it 97-91.

"This team stepped up when we had to," Mason said. "Down the stretch we had three or four good stops but we still need to play better basketball. We have to put teams away. When you get called on, you are supposed to produce, and I was able to do that tonight."

The Timberwolves closed the gap to 104-102 with 2:12 left when Peeler connected on a three-pointer, but a jumper and two free throws by Phills and a jumper and layup by David Wesley closed out the scoring down the stretch. Wesley finished with 10 assists.

In the third quarter, Charlotte used an 11-2 spurt to take a 64-54 lead at the 8:50 mark. The Timberwolves answered with a 10-2 run to pull within 72-71 at 4:21 following a free throw by Porter. The Hornets closed the quarter with an 82-81 lead.

Trailing 36-31 with 8:47 left in the first half, Charlotte used a 13-0 spurt to take the lead. Maxwell, who had seven points during the run, opened it with a three-pointer and closed it with a layup at 4:04. The Hornets took a 53-50 lead at the break.
