GAME RECAP

Christian Laettner scored 21 points off the bench as the Atlanta Hawks -- playing without injured All-Star Steve Smith -- handed the pathetic Denver Nuggets their 14th consecutive loss, 115-94, at Georgia Tech's Alexander Coliseum.

The Hawks struggled but used a 19-7 run to open a 73-59 lead with 3:26 left in the third before matching a season high in points. Tyrone Corbin added four of his 19 and Mookie Blaylock scored four of his 18 during the spurt, capped by Corbin's two free throws.

"It was a great balanced effort," said Corbin, one of six Hawks to score in double figures. "Everybody did a great job focusing on winning the ballgame. Everybody played aggressive right from the start. We had a little nap in the second quarter, but we were able to pull it out in the third quarter."

"It's the same thing for us every night," said Nuggets center Dean Garrett. "It's been the same scenario for us all year long. One quarter has killed us."

Laettner scored nine points during a 15-6 run to start the second quarter as Atlanta grabbed its largest lead, 46-30, with 7:36 left. But Garrett scored five of his 18 points during a 19-6 run and capped it with a three-foot hook, cutting the deficit to 52-49 at the break

"I have to try to do the job (off the bench), letting the team win," said Laettner. "We've been playing well. The main thing is trying to remain aggressive coming off the bench."

The Nuggets, who lost an NBA record-tying 23 straight games from December 9th-January 23rd, have dropped 14 consecutive games. Denver also fell to 0-34 against winning teams and failed to score 100 points for a franchise-record 14th consecutive game.

"I thought we played a pretty good first half, started off a little slow, got it going and played some decent defense in the second quarter," explained Denver coach Bill Hanzlik. "In the second half we were just poor. You can't win the game if you just give up layups and stuff in the paint. It won't work."

Atlanta has won five of six games and played without Smith, who had fluid drained from his right knee on Tuesday. The Hawks moved a game ahead of the New York Knicks for the fifth playoff spot in the East.

Dikembe Mutombo scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Chucky Brown added 13 points for the Hawks, who shot 55.7 percent (44-of-79) from the field and outrebounded the Nuggets, 48-35. Atlanta improved to 12-0 when shooting 50 percent or better.

Alan Henderson scored in double figures for 10th straight game with 11 points and Drew Barry added a career-high 10 assists for Atlanta.

"I've just been playing with a lot of confidence," said Barry. "I try to make the easy play and not turn the ball over, push the ball. I'm not really thinking about the future right now."

Johnny Newman scored 23 points and Garrett totaled 18 and 10 rebounds for Denver, which fell to 0-13 against the Central Division this season. Garrett eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career while scoring in double figures for just the second time in 10 games.

The Nuggets were beaten by at least 10 points for the 41st time this season. They also lost guard Eric Washington in the first quarter to a twisted right ankle. He did not return but said he would be back for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers.
