GAME RECAP

Antoine Walker scored 35 points on 16-of-26 shooting, leading the Boston Celtics to their fourth win in five games, 108-98 over the Washington Wizards.

Ron Mercer connected on 10-of-18 shots and finished with 24 points, and Kenny Anderson added 10 assists for Boston, which defeated the Wizards for the third time in four meetings this season. The Celtics have won eight of their last 11 games at the FleetCenter, improving to 21-11 at home.

"No question this was a big game for us," Walker said. "We're earning games like this. We're building up our confidence and momentum for the stretch. We're not the biggest team in the NBA or the most experienced, but we use our quickness and our aggressive defense.

"We knew they played the Knicks last night and they might be a little sluggish. The key for us was our rebounding, getting points off their turnovers and hitting our free throws down the stretch."

Chris Webber and Rod Strickland scored 23 points apiece for the Wizards, who fell to 12-18 on the road. Tracy Murray added 22 points and Webber and Murray each grabbed seven rebounds.

The Wizards outshot the Celtics from the field 52 percent (37-for-71) to 48 percent (44-for-92), but Boston outrebounded Washington, 41-39, including 20 on the offensive end.

The big difference in numbers was turnovers, with the Celtics converting 21 Washington miscues into 24 points. Boston only turned the ball over eight times, which Washington failed to convert into any points.

The Wizards took their last lead with 4:16 left in the first quarter, after Strickland made a layup.

It took Boston only nine seconds to regain the lead for good, with Walker hitting a jumper to make it 21-20. The Celtics built on their lead with an 8-0 run, started by Travis Knight's layup and ended by a pair of free throws by Dana Barros with 39.7 seconds remaining, making it 33-25.

Walker finished the first quarter with 16 points, helping the Celtics into a 35-29 lead.

Washington got within 38-37 in the second quarter on Stickland's layup, but Boston built the lead back to 57-48 at the break as Walker scored 24 points.

The Celtics opened their biggest lead of the second half, 62-50, at the 10:48 mark of the third quarter on a layup by Mercer. Washington fought back to within 76-73 just over seven minutes later as Strickland made one of two free throws.

But Boston went back up by 10 on three occasions in the final period. The Celtics connected on 9-of-11 attempts from the free throw line over the last 4:30, with Andrew DeClerq accounting making four foul shots.

"We were really pumped up for this game," Webber said. "It was frustrating. We would get it down to five or three but we couldn't do anything after that. It may have had something to do with playing last night against New York.

"My knee was a little stiff and Juwan (Howard) wasn't around because of his sprained ankle, but I'm not making any excuses. We're in a playoff race and we have to do it ourselves. We can't look at anyone to help us out."
