GAME RECAP

Mitch Richmond scored 32 points, including the tying free throws with 40 seconds to play, and Billy Owens made a pair of foul shots with 13.2 seconds left to give the Sacramento Kings a 98-96 victory over the struggling Vancouver Grizzlies.

Richmond drained two jumpers in a 6-0 spurt to open the fourth quarter as Sacramento took an 81-80 lead. Neither team led by more than two points the rest of the way.

Vancouver's Bryant Reeves converted a three-point play to break a 94-94 deadlock with 46 seconds remaining, but Richmond tied it with his foul shots. After Shareef Abdur-Rahim was unable to convert on the other end, Owens put the Kings in front with his free throws.

"Tonight was the prime example of just going to the line and making them when they counted," said Owens, who made all seven of his free throws. "I was something like 57 percent coming in, and it was pretty nice to be able to come in and knock them all down tonight."

Pete Chilcutt missed a long three-pointer and the Grizzlies were unable to hoist another shot before time expired, saddling Vancouver with its eighth straight defeat.

"We had a couple of botched defensive assignments," Reeves explained. "We put people on the line when we should have made them step up and knock the shots down, and we missed some big shots ourselves down the stretch."

Corliss Williamson had 23 points and eight rebounds and Owens finished with 15 and 15 for Sacramento, which snapped a five-game losing streak. Richmond, who handed out eight assists, made 12-of-13 free throws as the Kings went 11-for-12 from the line in the final quarter.

Abdur-Rahim had 30 points and 10 boards and Reeves added 26 points for the Grizzlies, who have lost 15 of their last 16 games and fell to 2-8 all-time against Sacramento.

"It was a situation where I felt we had the game in our favor, but some things happened to sway the game," Abdur-Rahim said.

Sam Mack scored seven of his nine points in a 20-5 burst in the first quarter that gave Vancouver a 23-14 lead. He sparked the run with a jumper, Reeves followed with a pair of inside baskets and a layup by Abdur-Rahim capped it with 3:05 remaining.

But Richmond answered with two free throws to start a brief 7-0 spurt, helping the Kings pull within 29-25 at the end of one period. Owens grabbed 10 rebounds in the opening 12 minutes.

Vancouver scored eight of the first 10 points of the second quarter, with back-to-back buckets by Reeves increasing the lead to 37-27. Abdur-Rahim scored nine straight points for the Grizzlies later in the period to help keep his team comfortably in front, and Vancouver took a 57-46 lead at the half.

"Defense was definitely the key. The first half they scored 57 points, and we wanted to come out in the third, shut them down and make them work for it," Richmond said. "Big Country (Reeves) and some others were having their way, so we had to play great defense."

Trailing 72-62 midway through the third period, Sacramento reeled off eight straight points to get back in it. Owens sparked that run with a three-point play and Anthony Johnson ended it with two fast-break layups, cutting the deficit to 72-70. But Vancouver closed the quarter with two straight hoops -- a layup by Reeves and a 14-footer by George Lynch -- to take an 80-75 lead heading into the fourth.

As proven by Chilcutt's miss in the final seconds, the Grizzlies were done in by poor three-point shooting. They shot just 3-of-15 from behind the arc despite hitting 50 percent (41-of-82) from the field overall.

"This is a very difficult loss to take tonight," Grizzlies coach Brian Hill said. "We still haven't been able to defend without fouling, which is a big concern of mine. They got 22 more free throws than we did."

Vancouver made just 11-of-17 free throws while Sacramento went 28-for-39. The Kings, who have won back-to-back games following a seven-game losing streak, shot 44 percent (34-of-77) from the floor and battled to a 39-39 deadlock on the boards.

This was the first meeting between these teams since they were involved in a four-player trade just before last month's deadline. Veteran Otis Thorpe, who had been a regular starter in Vancouver, started at center for Sacramento and finished with seven points and five rebounds. Michael Smith, formerly a starter with the Kings, started and ended up with eight rebounds and just two points for the Grizzlies. The other two players in that deal, Grizzlies guard Bobby Hurley and Kings guard Chris Robinson, did not play due to coaches' decisions.
