GAME RECAP

Shaquille O'Neal celebrated his 26th birthday with 23 points and Derek Fisher scored 13 points in the final quarter as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the San Antonio Spurs, 91-84, clinching the season series for the first time in six years.

O'Neal, who underwent minor surgery on his left big toe earlier in the day, was not much of a factor in the final period, scoring just three points. But two came on a layup that forced a 71-71 tie with 5:35 remaining. Eddie Jones stroked a three-pointer 37 seconds later and the Lakers led the rest of the way.

Fisher, starting at point guard for the injured Nick Van Exel, fueled the decisive 11-2 burst in the fourth quarter with six of his 17 points.

"I always knew that Derek had the ability to run our team," said O'Neal. "The reason he comes off the bench is because Nick Van Exel is a great guard, and Derek will become a great guard once he gets that experience. He's been doing his job the last six or seven games. He's playing well and having a good time."

Fisher hit on four of five shots, but was 8-of-10 from the line with five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

"I always have confidence in my shot and being able to knock it down," Fisher said. "Sometimes it's really hard to come off the bench and try to make so many things happen in only five or six minutes. With the situation the way it is now, I'm getting the chance to go out and just perform and not worry about mistakes."

The Lakers held a big advantage from the line, hitting 27-of-38 compared to the Spurs' 15-of-16 shooting from the stripe. Los Angeles, which won its third consecutive home game, shot just 43 percent (30-of-70) overall and was outrebounded 39-32.

Rick Fox added 17 points and Elden Campbell, playing with a stiff neck, collected 14 and a team-high seven rebounds for the Lakers, who have have won all three meetings with San Antonio this season.

Los Angeles took both meetings at home and clinched the five-game set with the Spurs for the first time since 1991-92.

Robinson and Tim Duncan combined for just seven points in the first half due to foul trouble. Robinson finished with 23 and 10 rebounds and Duncan added 21 and seven for San Antonio, which fell three games behind first-place Utah in the Midwest Division.

"I had a real bad first quarter, I got into foul trouble," said Robinson. "The team needs me to get the spark going early. You can't let them get off and rolling at the beginning of the game, it makes it too tough on us."

Avery Johnson finished with 14 points and 11 assists for San Antonio, which shot 44 percent and was victimized by 20 turnovers and 14 steals.

After Jones' three-pointer gave the Lakers a three-point lead, Fisher sank a free throw before Robinson dunked with four minutes, cutting it to 75-73. Fisher answered with a three-pointer and a 14-footer that gave Los Angeles an 80-73 edge.

The Spurs scrambled back and pulled within 83-81 on another Robinson slam, but Campbell cemented the win by driving around a flat-footed Duncan for a dunk with 41 seconds left.

Los Angeles led 44-36 after a first half that featured huge runs by both teams.

The Spurs trailed 17-11 midway through the first quarter before going on a 16-5 surge to take a 27-22 lead with 10:17 remaining in the second quarter. Carl Herrera scored all eight of his points in that stretch, during which the Lakers were held scoreless for 5 1/2 minutes.

The Lakers roared back, scoring 18 of the next 20 points to wrest a 40-29 advantage on Campbell's 12-footer with 3:31 to go. Fisher, O'Neal and Jones -- who finished with 11 points -- each collected four in the lopsided run.

San Antonio fell to a combined 1-10 against Seattle, the Lakers, Utah and Phoenix, the four top teams in the Western Confnerence.
