GAME RECAP

Eric Piatkowski scored a season-high 29 points as the Los Angeles Clippers avoided the embarrassment of losing the season series to the Denver Nuggets by posting a 100-89 victory.

Lamond Murray added 19 points and Isaac Austin 18 for the Clippers, who had dropped two of the first three meetings with the Nuggets this season. Los Angeles snapped a three-game losing streak overall and a seven-game road skid.

LaPhonso Ellis scored 20 points for the Nuggets, who blew a seven-point halftime lead and suffered their 15th straight loss. The loss leaves the Dallas Mavericks as the only team in the NBA that can still lose the season series to the hapless Nuggets.

"A lot of people give us a hard time because we have two losses to the Nuggets this year," Piatkowski said. "We don't want to lose to anybody three times in a year. We came to town early to get prepared."

"Denver may have the worst team in basketball, but they're not the worst team by far," Los Angeles coach Bill Fitch said. "If they were to play a seven-game series with that '72-73 Philadelphia team (NBA-worst 9-73), they would win in four straight. We didn't want to lose three games to this team, and I may have mentioned it at halftime that we had lost twice to them."

Ellis made two free throws with 5:40 to play to bring the Nuggets within 79-78. Piatkowski answered with two free throws of his own and then came up with a steal and layup to make it 83-78 just under one minute later. Dean Garrett hit two free throws, but Rodney Rogers buried a three-pointer to give the Clippers an 86-80 cushion with 4:03 to go.

The Nuggets came right back. Johnny Newman hit a jumper, and after two foul shots from Austin, Ellis dunked and Cory Alexander made a layup to slice the deficit to 88-86 with 1:41 to play. But Los Angeles ran off six straight points to take control. Murray and James Richardson scored inside before Darrick Martin sank two foul shots for a 94-86 advantage with 61 seconds remaining.

Ellis buried a three-pointer to bring Denver within five, but Austin knocked down a jumper, Martin hit two free throws and Murray made a layup for the final margin, which was Los Angeles' largest lead of the game.

Piatkowski scored 12 points in the first quarter as the Clippers raced to a 30-23 lead. But Denver stormed back in the second quarter, using seven points each from Alexander and Danny Fortson to open a 56-49 lead on Tony Battie's tip-in with 2.8 seconds left in the half.

Denver opened its largest lead at 62-52 on Anthony Goldwire's layup with 9:28 remaining in the third quarter. But Piatkowski knocked down a jumper to ignite a 12-4 surge as the Clippers closed within 66-64 when Murray nailed a three-pointer with 4:53 left in the period. Martin's three-pointer with 1:03 remaining reduced Denver's lead to 72-71 entering the fourth.

"In the first half, we moved the ball well," Denver coach Bill Hanzlik said. "We had some good transition going, but we got bogged down in the second half and had way too many turnovers and missed too many shots."

Martin finished with 11 points and Rogers had nine for the Clippers, who shot 46 percent (32-of-69) from the field.

Battie scored 12 points, Alexander and Bryant Stith had 11 and Garrett and Newman chipped in 10 apiece for the Nuggets, who shot 46 percent (33-of-74). Ellis grabbed 10 rebounds to help Denver to a 37-32 advantage on the boards.
