GAME RECAP

Anthony Mason had a pair of crucial three-point plays in the final four minutes and Glen Rice had 14 in the third quarter as the Charlotte Hornets rallied from an 11-point deficit to post a 109-100 victory over the reeling New Jersey Nets.

With the game tied 96-96 and 3:12 to play, Mason used a spin move in the lane to sink a layup and draw a foul. After Mason completed the three-point play, Bobby Phills added a free throw with 2:26 to go to push the lead to 100-96. After a miss by the Nets' Kendall Gill and an exchange of turnovers, Mason completed another three-point play to push the cushion to 103-96 with 82 seconds remaining.

"Your whole mindset should be to get everyone involved, but if people are hot, we got them the ball," said Mason. "We were not involved with our big people in the first half. We got more involved in the second half.

Rice had 14 of his 31 points in the third quarter when the Hornets, who are 19-1 when scoring more than 100 points, rallied from a 68-57 deficit. David Wesley had eight of his 17 points in the 18-4 run midway through the quarter that turned a 10-point deficit into a 78-74 lead.

"The first couple of minutes of the third quarter, we had to establish the pace in our favor. We started executing plays better," Rice said. "In the fourth, we had the same type of intensity and it carried over."

Mason finished with 12 points, 15 rebounds and six assists for the Hornets, who have won a season-high eight straight games and four in a row on the road. The winning streak is their longest since winning a franchise-record nine straight from April 2nd-16th of last season.

"I am really proud of our guys. As much as we fumbled the ball around and missed defensive assignments, we turned it around in the second half," said Hornets coach Dave Cowens.

Kerry Kittles had 21 and Sam Cassell and Keith Van Horn added 20 apiece for the Nets, who have lost five straight. The Nets have lost three straight since center Jayson Williams went down with an abdominal muscle strain.

"We did not make plays down the stretch," said Nets coach John Calipari. "I'll see if there is something I can change. I am going to go home and watch the tapes and see what I can learn. Maybe I should have made some substitutions. I do not want to blame anyone."

"It's not frustrating, it's just we're so damn close. This shows how important Jayson (Williams) is to this team," said Cassell. "His energy, his emotions, his desire. That's what we desire out there. We've got to find it somewhere."

Charlotte shot 57 percent from the field (38-of-67), including 20-of-32 in the second half. They made 10-of-16 three-point attempts and were 23-of-27 free throw attempts

The Nets led 54-40 with 2:45 to go in the first half following a pair of free throws by Cassell.
