GAME RECAP

Nine players scored in double figures as the Phoenix Suns -- without suspended forward Antonio McDyess -- posted season highs in assists, three-pointers and victory margin in a 134-105 pasting of the lowly Los Angeles Clippers.

George McCloud made all six of his three-pointers as the Suns drained 12-of-25 shots from behind the arc. He scored 18 of his 21 points in the second quarter, when Phoenix broke open the game with a 26-8 burst.

"It's just a situation where an opportunity presented itself for me and I just tried to take advantage of it," McCloud said. "When you're not getting a lot of minutes, and the thing that has let me down the most is my shooting, you want to come out and get off to a quick start, and that's what I did tonight."

The Suns made 14 of their first 15 shots of the second period, hitting 17-of-22 overall, and buried their first eight attempts in the third quarter, when they connected on 12-of-16. Phoenix (40-21), which matched its victory total from last season, shot a season-high 59.3 percent from the field, making a season-best 51 shots in 86 attempts.

"Bad shooting is contagious and good shooting is contagious. Bad defense is contagious and good defense is contagious," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "We got a lot of turnovers and we reacted. We gave them a lot of easy baskets with our aggressive defense, but we also got a lot of huge baskets for ourselves."

Jason Kidd handed out 13 of the Suns' 40 assists and Kevin Johnson scored 13 of his 19 points in the third quarter as Phoenix built its largest lead, 104-67. The Suns, who won for just the third time in eight games, obviously did not miss McDyess, who was suspended one game and fined $7,500 for Saturday's altercation with Houston's Hakeem Olajuwon.

Eric Piatkowski drained a team-record seven three-pointers and scored 23 points for the Clippers, who were the victims the last time the Suns reached 134 points in a non-overtime game, on January 14th, 1995.

"I tried to get in the three-point shootout but I guess we as a team need to get some more wins under our belt before we can get respect from the league," Piatkowski said.

Steve Nash scored all 14 of his points in the second period as Phoenix notched a season high for points in a quarter with 42. The Suns also recorded their best total in one half this season by taking a 74-51 halftime lead.

Lamond Murray scored 20 points and drained a three-pointer to give the Clippers their last lead, 18-16, with 5:12 left in the opening period. Dennis Scott, who started in place of the injured Rex Chapman, responded with a three of his own to spark a 10-0 spurt.

Cliff Robinson, the only Sun that played and did not score in double figures, highlighted the run with a three-point play before Hot Rod Williams capped it with two free throws for a 26-18 lead with 3:28 left. Scott scored eight of his 11 points in the first quarter, helping Phoenix to a 32-22 edge.

"It wasn't really a game. After the first 20 points, the Suns basically had it their own way," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said. "If anybody would tell you we'd score 105 points and still lose by 29, you'd say we'd have a hard time spelling defense, let alone playing it. We couldn't do anything to stop them, inside or outside."

Isaac Austin, who scored 21 points, hit a short hook shot to pull Los Angeles within 40-33 with 8:29 remaining in the second period. But Danny Manning answered with a layup to open the 26-8 run.

Nash and McCloud each buried two three-pointers and scored 10 and eight points, respectively, in the burst. Williams, who registered 16 points, capped it with a layup, creating a 66-41 cushion with 2:52 left before halftime. McCloud made all six of his shots and drained four three-pointers in the second quarter.

"Second quarter, I got it going, and Jason (Kidd), knowing that and knowing my game, kept feeding me the ball," McCloud said. "And guys were telling me to shoot the ball, and you get it going like that, you feel like you can't miss and it's a good feeling."

Los Angeles got no closer than 27 points after halftime and Phoenix took its biggest lead, 104-67, on a pair of foul shots by Johnson with 3:41 to go in the third quarter.

Little-used Marko Milic scored a career-high 13 points, Kidd added 12 and Manning and Mark Bryant chipped in 10 apiece for Phoenix, which swept the season series from the Clippers and won for the sixth time in seven meetings overall.

"There's not too many times when you have a 30-point lead going to the fourth quarter and a guy like Marko and some other guys can get a chance to take advantage of a whole quarter to get some good basketball, so it meant a lot for all of us," Johnson explained.

Maurice Taylor contributed 15 points for Los Angeles, which made 12-of-17 from three-point range but still suffered its 11th loss in 13 games. The Clippers closed a 1-3 road trip and lost for the eighth time in their last nine games away from home.
