GAME RECAP

Glen Rice scored 22 points and Anthony Mason added 21 and six rebounds against his former team as the Charlotte Hornets matched a franchise record with their ninth straight win, 85-78 over the New York Knicks.

Matt Geiger recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds and David Wesley had 13 points and six assists for Charlotte, which matched the longest winning streak in club history, set from April 2nd-16th, 1997.

"It was another really determined effort by us," said Charlotte coach Dave Cowens. "The thing that hurt us the most was our free-throw shooting (18-for-27) and close shots to the basket that we missed. We got boards when we needed them down the stretch. We give the ball to Mase late in the game, because he takes care of it, he gets the ball to the shooters, and he creates his shots."

Vlade Divac came off the bench to grab 12 boards for the Hornets, who had lost the last six meetings with the Knicks, including a three-game sweep in the opening round of last season's Eastern Conference playoffs.

Allan Houston scored 25 points and Larry Johnson added 23 points and nine rebounds for the Knicks, who have lost four of their last five games. Charles Oakley had a season-high 22 rebounds for New York, which made all 17 of its free throws but shot just 35 percent (29-for-83) from the floor.

"We just missed shots, we couldn't shoot," said New York coach Jeff Van Gundy. "We played hard. I thought we had good shots. Our shot selection at the end of the first half, though, I thought was poor. We had (Johnson) down low with a guard on his back and we go down and jack up a long jumper. The ball did not go inside."

Houston and Charlie Ward, the Knicks starting backcourt, combined to go just 10-for-31 from the field, including 1-for-10 from three-point range.

New York tied the game, 72-72, when Oakley hit a layup with 5:30 remaining. But Rice answered with a pair of free throws to trigger a 9-2 spurt and give the Hornets the lead for good 54 seconds later. Bobby Phills, who had seven points and six rebounds, followed with a jumper to give Charlotte a 76-72 lead with 3:57 to play.

"One of the things I wanted to do is be as aggressive as possible," Rice said. "I tried to take it inside on them. We're playing great basketball right now, it's a good sign when we win with team defense."

Houston's basket pulled the Knicks within 76-74 with 3:41 remaining, but Wesley responded with a three-pointer to push Charlotte's lead to 79-74 with 3:17 to go before Mason's jumper capped the surge 1:43 later. Anthony Bowie converted two free throws to cut Charlotte's lead to 81-76 with 83 seconds left and Johnson followed with two more free throws 29 seconds later. But the Knicks did not score again and Geiger and Rice each knocked down a pair of free throws for the final margin.

Mason and Rice each had six points in the first period as the Hornets held a 24-23 edge. New York had its final lead when Johnson made a layup and free throw after getting fouled to make it 33-29 with 7:48 left in the second quarter. Rice had seven points as the Hornets went on a 15-4 run that he capped with a three-pointer for a 44-37 lead with 2:47 left in the first half.

"We have so many weapons, we have to move the ball around and keep everyone happy," Mason said. "I still work on free throws every day after practice."

Charlotte took a 47-43 lead into halftime and had its biggest lead when Rice's three-pointer capped an 11-4 spurt for a 60-49 cushion with 5:13 left in the third. Houston had six points as the Knicks answered with 10 straight points, closing withing 60-59 on his driving layup with 1:46 to play in the third.
