GAME RECAP

Karl Malone scored 25 points and the red-hot Utah Jazz posted their season-high eighth straight victory, 110-95 over the Sacramento Kings, clinching a playoff berth.

Malone also contributed team-highs with nine rebounds and nine assists, Bryon Russell had 17 points off the bench and John Stockton 16 for Utah, which won for the 15th time in its last 16 games.

Utah, which had lost two games at Sacramento earlier this season -- 97-95 on November 20th and 113-101 on December 9th -- has won 15 of its last 17 meetings with the Kings.

"We got off to a good start and we shot the ball pretty well," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "In the second half they struggled with their shooting a bit and we were able to get a bigger lead and hang on to it."

Corliss Williamson and Mitch Richmond scored 21 points apiece for Sacramento, which has dropped eight of its last 10 games and six of its last seven on the road.

The Jazz shot 59 percent (41-for-69) from the field and 54 percent (7-for-13) from three-point range, with Russell hitting all three of his attempts from behind the arc. Utah also outrebounded Sacramento, 35-29.

The Kings connected on 47 percent (37-for-49) of their field goal attempts but were just 3-of-10 from three-point range.

"Being down eight at the half is a whole lot better than being down 43, like we were the last time we were here," Sacramento coach Eddie Jordan said. "I would have liked to see us use the clock more and get a better shot on some of our possessions, but we did a good job following the game plan down to the last minute. Defensively, we didn't do the things we needed to do to keep them down."

Richmond's jumper 18 seconds after the opening tap gave Sacramento a 2-0 lead, but Utah reeled off 14 of the next 16 points, with Malone contributing six points, to take the lead for good. Adam Keefe started and ended the spurt with layups, giving the Jazz a 14-4 advantage.

Sacramento got the deficit down to 28-21 with 35 seconds left in the quarter on a 17-foot jumper by Otis Thorpe.

Just over four minutes into the second quarter, Mark Hendrickson's tip-in pulled the Kings within 33-30, but Utah answered with a 7-1 spurt to go up 40-31.

The Kings reduced Utah's lead to five points three more times in the second quarter, but Russell's three-pointer just before the buzzer gave the Jazz a 53-45 at halftime.

After a running jumper by Williamson with 4:57 left in the third quarter reduced Utah's lead to 70-61, the Jazz ran off eight straight points to open a double-digit lead. Malone opened it with a 16-footer and closed it with two free throws, giving the Jazz a 78-61 lead with 2:46 left in the quarter.

"What about Karl just missing a triple-double and playing for only 29 minutes?" Russell asked. "Karl's our big gun and he's having a great season, just like he did last year. The five years I've been here he keeps getting better every year. Hopefully he can get the MVP again."

The Jazz increased their lead to 103-82 midway through the fourth quarter following a pair of free throws by Russell, and the closest the Kings got down the stretch was 108-95 on a tip-in by Chris Robinson with 25.8 seconds left.

Jeff Hornacek missed his first game of the season with a sprained right knee, ending his consecutive games streak at 299. Shandon Anderson started in his place and scored 14 points in 31 minutes.
