GAME RECAP

Shaquille O'Neal scored 12 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter and the Los Angeles Lakers used a massive advantage at the free throw line for a 121-107 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Rick Fox added 20 points and Derek Fisher had 19 points and 10 assists for the Lakers, who placed seven players in double figures in winning their fourth straight game. Los Angeles was 40-of-52 from the line, while Portland was only 14-of-22.

Rasheed Wallace scored 20 points and Arvydas Sabonis and Isaiah Rider contributed 17 apiece for the Trail Blazers, who were again without injured point guard Damon Stoudamire and missed a chance to win the season series from their Pacific Division rivals for the second straight season.

"They beat us pretty bad after the All-Star break, so we wanted to come right back at them and play hard and play tough," O'Neal said. "We're playing more consistent and smarter. We've been very consistent the last four games, so hopefully we can develop that and build some momentum."

The game was tied at 63-63 after Wallace's jumper with 9:01 left in the third quarter. But O'Neal knocked down a jumper and Fisher nailed a three-pointer before Robert Horry converted a three-point play for a 71-63 cushion with 7:03 remaining in the period.

Wallace answered with a dunk, but Fox and Eddie Jones drilled consecutive three-pointers to cap a 14-2 burst and extend the lead to 77-65 with 5:59 to play in the period. Portland sliced the defict to three points late in the period, but Kobe Bryant scored Los Angeles' final five points to give the Lakers a 93-85 lead entering the fourth.

Wallace got the first basket of the fourth quarter to bring the Blazers within 93-87. They were only down seven with 9:21 to go before Fisher buried back-to-back three-pointers and O'Neal followed with a hook shot as the Lakers opened a 106-91 bulge with 7:05 remaining.

"I thought the Lakers played very well," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Shaq was able to establish himself inside the paint, particularly late in the game in the second half. We turned the ball over some, gave them some opportunities in the open court."

Portland only got as close as 14 points on Wallace's bucket with 2:56 to go. O'Neal answered with a free throw and a dunk to give Los Angeles its largest lead at 116-99 with just under 2 1/2 minutes to play.

The Blazers scored the first eight points of the game, but the Lakers fought back to grab a 27-25 lead entering the second quarter. O'Neal scored 10 points in the second as Los Angeles took a 58-55 lead at the half.

"I thought our guys played a solid game throughout," said Los Angeles coach Del Harris, who earned his 200th win as Lakers coach. "I felt very good after the first two or three minutes. It took us a little time to get on track because they jumped right on us with the press and we just were not quite in sync. In any case, we adjusted and I thought the guys played a terrific game."

Bryant scored 13 points for the Lakers, who shot 47 percent (36-of-77) from the field. Horry, Jones and Elden Campbell all finished with 11 points.

Walt Williams scored 16 points off the bench for the Blazers, who shot 48 percent (44-of-91).
