GAME RECAP

Alonzo Mourning collected 13 points and eight rebounds to lead six scorers in double figures as the Miami Heat hammered the Cleveland Cavaliers, 97-74, handing them their sixth straight road loss.

Mark Strickland also scored 13 points and P.J. Brown contributed 12 and 11 rebounds for Miami, which took control with a 26-8 first-quarter outburst and did not have anyone play more than 30 minutes.

Dan Majerle added 12 points and Tim Hardaway and Brent Barry had 10 apiece for the first-place Heat, who have won 17 of 20 games to open an eight-game lead over New York in the Atlantic Division. Duane Causwell's 12 boards led Miami, which received scoring from all 11 players.

"We have got 19 games left and we have to make a concerted push in these last 19 games, especially here at home, to make up as much ground as we can," said Heat coach Pat Riley. "We are still trying to catch Chicago and Indiana (the top teams in the East)."

Miami trails the Pacers by just six percentage points and is 2 1/2 games behind the Bulls.

Reserve Derek Anderson scored 16 points for the Cavaliers, who followed a 32-point first half with a 13-point third quarter and trailed 71-45 after three periods. Cleveland shot just 35 percent (28-of-79) from the field and were outrebounded, 49-39.

Shawn Kemp was held to eight points on just 4-of-14 shooting.

"I have been playing terribly," Kemp said. "What I am going to have to do is stop helping other people and concentrate on my own game. They are among the elite teams in the East but they still have a big hill to climb in Chicago and Indiana."

Miami hit 46 percent (39-of-84) of its shots in winning for the fifth time in six home games.

The Cavs went on the attack early, building a 9-4 lead three minutes into the game before Miami took over. Brown's bucket with 6:43 remaining put the Heat ahead for good at 12-11.

Mourning had nine of his points and Barry seven as Miami took a 30-17 lead after one quarter. It kept the pressure on and crafted a 53-32 cushion at the break.

"The games are extremely important from here on out," Mourning said. "Right now we are chasing Indiana, hopefully we can catch Chicago. The team did extremely well tonight -- both offensively and defensively."

The Heat, who took three of four games from Cleveland this season, continued to pour in the points while stepping up their defensive pressure in the third quarter. Miami rattled off 12 of the first 14 points in the third quarter, creating a 66-34 bulge, and went on to hold the Cavs to just five field goals in the period.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 11 points and six rebounds and Wesley Person scored 10 points for Cleveland, which was held under 80 points for the ninth time this season.
