GAME RECAP

Cedric Ceballos scored 11 of his season-high 25 points during a late fourth-quarter run and the Dallas Mavericks rallied for an improbable 104-97 overtime victory over Chicago, snapping a six-game losing streak against the Bulls.

The Mavericks erased a 19-point deficit, closing with a 17-2 burst over the final 3:44 of regulation, then outscoring Chicago in overtime, 13-6.

It was Dallas' first win over the Bulls since November 12th, 1994 and its first at home over Chicago since the 1987-88 season, ending a nine-game home slide against the Central Division leaders. The Mavs improved to 3-4 in overtime this season, while Chicago suffered its first overtime loss.

Michael Finley made 14-of-29 field goals and finished with 32 points to lead Dallas. Ceballos added 13 rebounds and three blocks and A.C. Green had 12 points and a season-high 17 rebounds.

"I kept telling the team I didn't think we were playing well," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "I don't know how we kept hanging around but we did. Maybe fate was with us. In overtime we were terrific. That's the only great basketball we played. The Bulls usually lose a game once a year to a bad team and they gave us the present tonight."

Michael Jordan scored 26 points but missed 14-of-24 field goal attempts for Chicago, which had a four-game winning streak snapped and lost for only the second time in 14 games. Toni Kukoc had 22 points, Scottie Pippen added 18 on 7-of-18 shooting and Dennis Rodman grabbed 22 rebounds for the Bulls.

"The Mavericks deserved it, they played hard to win the game," Chicago coach Phil Jackson said. "The way things were going, we weren't putting them away. We just didn't make our free throws."

Dallas scored the first five points of overtime on a dunk by Ceballos and a three-pointer by Finley. The Bulls closed within 98-96 after Jordan hit a corner jumper with 2:25 remaining, but Ceballos answered with a drive 25 seconds later.

With 1:08 left, Jordan hit one of two free throws for Chicago's final point. Chris Anstey followed with a dunk off a feed from Finley and Green made two free throws with 6.9 seconds remaining.

"It shows us that we can play with some of the better teams in this league," Finley said. "We just need to keep the intensity up to finish this year. We came from what seemed like a hole so deep it was impossible for us to climb out. Fortunately, somebody threw a rope down and we climbed out."

"We made enough mistakes down the stretch to give the game away," Jordan said. "After the way we've played the last couple of games, it's very disappointing to lose a game like this. It didn't happen the way it was supposed to happen. We gave away this game."

Chicago was seemingly in control in the fourth quarter after a layup by Jordan capped a 10-0 run and made it 79-60 with 8:52 remaining. Jud Buechler hit the Bulls' last field goal of the quarter, making it 89-74 with 3:44 to play.

The Mavericks scored 17 of the next 19 points to send the game to overtime. Green started the spurt with a pair of free throws and Chicago's only points down the stretch were two foul shots by Jordan. His free throw with 15.7 seconds left gave the Bulls a 91-86 edge.

A 10-footer by Hubert Davis with 10.5 seconds left cut the margin to three and on the ensuing inbounds play, Pippen was called for five seconds. That set up the tying three-pointer by Ceballos with 3.9 seconds left. Kukoc's drive at the buzzer rolled off the rim, forcing the extra session.

"Initially, the play was supposed to go to Hubert Davis," Ceballos said of his shot. "Scottie played it well. He wouldn't let me get to the other side. We came back and the shot was there for us. It just dropped.

"I won't believe it until I watch the film and it sinks in. For us to get a win against great players like that is a great motivator."
