GAME RECAP

Karl Malone scored 14 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter as the Utah Jazz took control in the final period en route to their season-high ninth straight win, 110-101 over the struggling Vancouver Grizzlies.

Greg Foster added 18 points and John Stockton netted 16 for the Jazz, who have won 16 of their last 17 games to open a 3 1/2-game lead over second-place San Antonio in the Midwest Division.

Stockton also became the second player in NBA history to score at least 15,000 points and dish out 10,000 assists when he scored a basket at the 6:25 mark of the first quarter. Magic Johnson is the other player to accomplish the feat.

Bryant Reeves scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Shareef-Abdur Rahim added 19 points for the Grizzlies, who have dropped 10 of their last 11 games and nine straight on the road.

The Jazz held a 86-75 lead after Bryon Russell hit a free throw with 11:18 to play in the fourth quarter. But the Grizzlies got back in the game with a 13-2 run, capped by Tony Massenburg's dunk with 7:35 to go that forged a 88-88 tie.

After Chris Morris hit a jumper to give the Jazz a 90-88 lead, Malone took over. He scored all of Utah's points in a 8-5 spurt that gave the Jazz a 98-93 advantage with 5:21 remaining.

Malone, who made 10-of-16 shots from the field, hit a 15-foot jumper to push the lead to 106-97 with 3:15 to go. The Grizzlies got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

"I certainly don't want to jinx him," Stockton said of Malone. "I know everybody has superstitions but he has been absolutely terrific. You just have to shake your head sometimes. You can even get used to expecting things out of him and he goes far beyond what you expect. A player like him is something special."

"We've endured quite a bit and quite a few things but I've got to be fair and sometimes I guess I expect this team to win," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "I mean you have to expect to step out there on the floor to win and if you don't have those expectations of yourselves in this business I guarantee you it's easy to lose."

The Jazz led 10-8 with 7:18 left in the opening quarter before going on a 10-2 burst. Foster and Malone each had four points in the surge.

Stockton scored 14 points and Foster had 12 in the opening half as the Jazz held a 57-51 lead at intermission.

Bobby Hurley added 17 points for the Grizzlies, who shot only 39.5 percent (34-of-86), compared to 51 percent (36-of-71) for the Jazz.

"When you fall behind early and try to make a comeback it's a tough thing to do, especially on the road," Hurley said. "It's even tougher when you come into a place like Utah, where you have such a veteran team."
