GAME RECAP

Grant Hill scored 19 points and came up with a huge defensive play in the closing seconds and Jerry Stackhouse had 19 points off the bench as the Detroit Pistons erased an 11-point second-half deficit and defeated the Boston Celtics, 96-92.

Detroit sank 7-of-8 free throws in the final 2:58 as it snapped a four-game road losing streak.

"This is a big win when we're trying to make a push for the playoffs, especially getting it on the road," said Hill.

Boston's Antoine Walker grabbed a rebound of teammate Ron Mercer's miss but Hill stripped the All-Star forward in the paint. Joe Dumars came up with the loose ball and sank two free throws to cap the scoring with four seconds left.

"This one was a tough one to swallow, especially when you have a chance at the end," said Walker, who totaled 19 points and 18 rebounds. "Tonight we didn't have Kenny (Anderson) and our ball movement was not very good, and I didn't play very well either."

Anderson played only nine minutes before leaving with a chronic left knee problem. He did not return and is listed as day-to-day.

"They did the MRI and it just showed a bone bruise, some tendinitis, but that's the good thing," said Anderson, who is averaging 13 points and 5.8 assists. "It wasn't too serious, no ligament damage. That's what they tell me."

"They played without Kenny Anderson," added Detroit coach Alvin Gentry. "Kenny is one of the premier point guards in the league. And without him we were able to do some things."

Detroit, which attempted 24 more free throws than Boston, going 36-of-47 from the line.

"We've got to give Detroit credit because they played an excellent game. They were very hungry," said Boston coach Rick Pitino. "This is a team that went to the line 43 times against Indiana (on Wednesday) and 47 times tonight against us."

With the Pistons leading 93-92, Dumars missed a short jumper from the left side but Stackhouse skied for the offensive rebound and was fouled as he attempted to milk the clock. Stackhouse, who also had five rebounds, hit the second of two free throws, giving the Pistons a 94-92 lead with 17 seconds to play.

Ahead 93-90, the Pistons fouled one of Boston's best three-point shooters, Dana Barros, on his drive to the hoop with 42 seconds left. He sank both free throws, closing the deficit to 93-92. Stackhouse restored Detroit's three-point edge eight seconds later with a pair of free throws.

Andrew DeClerq put back Walter McCarty's missed three-pointer to cut the Detroit lead to 91-90 with 74 seconds left. The offensive hustle came 30 seconds after Hill and Dumars worked a pretty give-and-go, resulting in Hill's dunk.

Walker worked hard under the Detroit basket, grabbing his own rebound twice before scoring to cut the deficit to 89-88 with 2:20 to go. Dumars, who scored 17 points, sank two free throws to give the Pistons their first three-point lead of the second half with 2:36 left.

Brian Williams, who had 15 points and eight rebounds, gave Detroit its first lead of any kind in the second half, 85-84, with the first of two free-throw attempts with 3:58 left. After Williams missed the second, Stackhouse grabbed the offensive rebound and slammed it in for an 87-84 edge.

Boston had its biggest lead, 67-56, but Stackhouse scored six points during a 13-2 run that helped Detroit rally for a 69-69 tie. Williams hit a pair from the line 54 seconds into the fourth quarter to forge the deadlock.

Jerome Williams and Malik Sealy chipped in 10 points apiece off the bench for Detroit, which shot 42 percent (29-of-69) from the field and committed 16 turnovers.

"I said if we keep our turnovers to 15 or fewer that I thought we could win this game," said Gentry. "Sixteen turnovers is very good against this team. They are relentless."

The Pistons and Celtics are tied for 12th in the Eastern Conference, 3 1/2 games behind New Jersey and Washington, who are tied for the final playoff spot.

"They came out fighting tonight but the ball just bounced our way," said Stackhouse. "We're still in the playoff hunt and I'm not throwing in the towel yet."

Mercer scored 16 points and McCarty added 14 off the bench for Boston, which has lost three straight games for the first time in nearly two months.

"We've tried very hard to make the playoffs but right now I don't think it's reachable," said Pitino. "We're going to keep fighting until the end. We're back to sqaure one without Kenny."
