GAME RECAP

Chris Webber scored 22 points and made the go-ahead layup with 13.3 seconds remaining to lift the Washington Wizards to an 83-80 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, who had their franchise-record winning streak stopped at 10 games.

Webber, who also had 11 rebounds, hit one free throw to tie the game, 80-80, with 38 seconds to play. After Charlotte failed to score on its possession, Webber drove the lane for the winning shot. The Hornets had a chance to tie or take the lead, but J.R. Reid was called for traveling with 4.1 seconds left. Rod Strickland was fouled by David Wesley one second later and converted one free throw.

"Chris went in hard and greedy and made the big shot for us tonight," Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "Looking back at the history of these two teams it usually comes down to the final basket. They've been good games and very close."

Strickland had 15 points and nine assists and Terry Davis also scored 15 points for Washington, which has won three of its last four games and split four meetings with Charlotte this season.

"Terry Davis played well for us tonight," Strickland said. "We needed that kind of performance from him in order to win. This was a big win for us tonight. We wanted to win and came in and got the job done. I'm so glad that Chris hit that shot, because I didn't want to go into overtime. I was getting tired."

Glen Rice scored 27 points and Anthony Mason added 16 and nine rebounds for the Hornets, who lost for the first time since February 20th. Mason sprained his right ankle in the second quarter and did not play in the second half.

"I thought this was a winnable game for us despite Mason going out in the second half," said Charlotte coach Dave Cowens. "They're such a tough team to match up with. We started out going big on them. We tried switching defenses and personnel until we could find the right mix. Once we started running the offense in the fourth quarter, we did well despite having a miserable third quarter."

Reid contributed 13 points and Matt Geiger grabbed 11 rebounds for Charlotte.

"We'd like to keep going but this is the NBA," Reid said about the streak. "You can't win every game every night. It's tough, when you get the opportunity you have to be ready to come in to play. When I get the chances to get in, the guys have confidence in me and get me involved."

The Wizards led, 71-60, when Davis made a jumper with 8:34 left in the fourth quarter. Vlade Divac, who had seven points and five rebounds, answered with a layup to trigger a 13-2 run. Rice's layup capped the run, tying the game at 73 with 3:35 to play. Reid completed a three-point play to give the Hornets a 78-77 edge with 2:25 to go. Davis followed with a pair of free throws and Reid answered with a jumper to give Charlotte its final lead, 80-79, with 59 seconds remaining.

Washington shot 57 percent (12-for-22) from the field in the first half and held a 28-18 advantage. The Wizards had their biggest lead of the game at 27-14 when Strickland converted a pair of free throws with 87 seconds to go in the first.

Rice scored 13 points in Charlotte's 17-4 run that closed the deficit to 35-34, as Mason hit a jumper with 5:55 left in the second period. Mason made another jumper with 29 seconds left before halftime to pull the Hornets within 43-41. Strickland scored four points as the Wizards ended the third with a 15-4 burst, taking a 64-54 lead into the final period.
