GAME RECAP

Dikembe Mutombo registered 21 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots as the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Boston Celtics, 93-77, for their eighth win in 10 games.

Alan Henderson added 17 points and 11 rebounds and Tyrone Corbin had 16 and eight for Atlanta, which won its fifth straight home game and took the season series, 2-1. The Hawks avenged an 89-85 home loss to Boston on January 23rd and have captured nine of the last 10 meetings in Atlanta.

Antoine Walker totaled 16 points and nine boards and Ron Mercer scored 14 points as Boston dropped its fourth straight game and third in a row on the road. It was the Celtics' lowest point total since losing by the same score at Detroit on December 13th.

Mutombo netted 10 points in the opening 12 minutes to pace the Hawks to an 18-13 lead. Boston's Tyus Edney hit two free throws to open the scoring in the second quarter before Henderson and Christian Laettner combined for 12 points in a 15-2 run that gave Atlanta a 33-17 cushion with 6:57 to go.

"When you get down to a good team like Atlanta, it's hard to come back," said Edney. "But with our style, we're going to keep coming at you and keep trying to get back into the game. I thought we almost got there. Almost got over the hump. A couple of plays, we just didn't have."

Boston scored the first six points of the second half to close to 51-40, but Atlanta answered with 12 consecutive points. Mutombo scored five in the run, as did Corbin, including a three-pointer with 4:57 left that extended the lead to 63-40.

"We were going inside to challenge them," said Mutombo. "Getting their big guy in foul trouble and just taking the ball and throwing it in the hoop. We started that from the beginning and just took the game away from them."

The margin was 70-51 after three quarters and Eldridge Recasner's basket early in the fourth made it 74-53 before Boston again rallied with an 18-7 surge. Mercer had 10 points in the run, including a jumper with 4:27 remaining that narrowed the difference to 81-71.

But Chuckie Brown scored half the points in an 8-0 burst that widened the lead for Atlanta.

"You know Boston is going to do a lot of doubling and trapping," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens. "I told the team I don't want them back in the game. I want to put a team like this away. It's not easy. But at the same time, if you have your focus and move the ball and play off the inside, which we did, they can't stop us. They can't stop Dikembe down in the low blocks. They can't stop Alan (Henderson) or Christian, so we tried to go inside a lot. We got the job done."

Mookie Blaylock added 10 points and five assists for Atlanta, which won the rebounding battle, 49-33, and used just eight players. Steve Smith tied a season low with five points, but grabbed eight boards.

"We feel very bad about the way we played at Philly (on Friday)," said Corbin. "We came out tonight and played very aggressive. We had some lapses in the game, but we were fortunate enough to put it together and win the ballgame."

Andrew DeClercq collected 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Edney had 12 points and six assists in place of Kenny Anderson, who was out with a sore left knee. Boston shot 37 percent (32-of-87) from the floor, including 1-for-9 from three-point range.

"The Hawks were just significantly better than us," said Boston coach Rick Pitino. "We are a much better team with Kenny Anderson than without him. We get much higher percentages. We are trying awfully hard. It's a little bit like the beginning of the year, where we struggled from the field. Our buckets don't come easy. We're not packing anything in. We're trying very hard to come back."

The Hawks improved to 7-0 on Sundays, 32-3 when outshooting its opponent and 14-0 when its foe shoots under 40 percent.
