GAME RECAP

Jason Kidd recorded his third triple-double of the season and his second straight against his former team as the Phoenix Suns clinched their 10th consecutive playoff appearance with a 100-90 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Kidd finished with 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting to go along with 13 rebounds and 12 assists. He notched the assist that gained him his 18th career triple-double with 7:51 to play, feeding Antonio McDyess for a lay-in that capped a key 7-0 spurt and opened an 85-75 cushion.

Kidd's fifth triple-double as a Sun landed him in fifth place on the active list and 17th all-time. He also tied a career high with five steals to go along with two blocks.

"I don't care about a triple-double as long as we win," said Kidd. "This is the first time I've been in this position, a team not just fighting for the playoffs, but trying to get homecourt advantage. It's a great experience."

McDyess and reserve Danny Manning each netted 17 points for the Suns, who moved into a tie with San Antonio for fourth place in the Western Conference with their fourth straight win. McDyess grabbed nine rebounds and Manning six to help Phoenix to a 49-40 edge on the backboards.

"I think we came up with some loose balls and made some plays down the stretch at the defensive end that really helped us out," Manning said. "We didn't really play well offensively, but at that point, we stepped it up defensively."

Former Sun Michael Finley collected 20 points, 12 assists and six rebounds and rookie Chris Anstey fell one point shy of his season high with 19 points for Dallas, which has lost four of its last five games.

Kidd scored 15 points and Cliff Robinson added his 10 in the first half to pace Phoenix to a 50-45 advantage at the break. Former Sun Cedric Ceballos scored nine points in the first 24 minutes to lead the Mavs, but left for good after bruising his right knee with nine minutes to go in the second quarter.

Anstey, who shot 8-of-17 from the field, pulled Dallas within 57-54 by converting a three-point play with 8:21 to go in the third quarter. But the Suns rattled off 12 straight points, building a 69-54 cushion on McDyess' breaking dunk with 4:40 left.

The Mavericks chipped away, narrowing the gap to 78-75 on Khalid Reeves' first field goal, a three-pointer with 9:44 remaining in the game. Phoenix answered 24 seconds later on Manning's 16-footer followed by a three-pointer by George McCloud, who was held to five points by his old team. McDyess' bucket capped the burst.

Dallas crept within 87-81 on a basket by Finley with 5:48 to play, but McDyess sank 1-of-2 from the line and Rex Chapman sank two free throws and a three-pointer to cement the victory with 4:30 remaining.

"We stayed in the game and competed and didn't give up," said Dallas coach Don Nelson. "I was very pleased with our performance."

Chapman hit just 5-of-15 from the floor and scored 15 points for the Suns, who shot 47 percent (41-of-88) from the field. Phoenix had 14 steals and outscored the Mavericks in transition, 24-7.

Hubert Davis had 13 points and Shawn Bradley 11 for Dallas, which shot 42 percent (37-of-88) from the floor and 14-of-21 from the stripe.
