GAME RECAP

Matt Geiger and Dell Curry each scored 18 points, leading the red-hot Charlotte Hornets to their 11th win in 12 games, 109-87 over the Denver Nuggets, who saw their first winning streak of the season come to an end.

Glen Rice added 17 points, Geiger grabbed 14 rebounds and Vlade Divac nine rebounds and seven assists for Charlotte, which had its franchise-record 10-game winning streak snapped with a 83-80 loss to Washington on Saturday.

Johnny Newman scored 17 points and Anthony Goldwire added 15 for Denver, which had won back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Nuggets were denied their first three-game winning streak since December 18th-23rd, 1996. Bobby Jackson returned from a 13-game absence from a broken finger to contribute nine points and eight rebounds.

"Our mental effort was not where it should have been tonight," Denver coach Bill Hanzlik said. "I thought we had a chance in the first half but we didn't get the job done. Charlotte did a good job of double-teaming us and we didn't do a good job of finding our open shooters."

Denver (7-59) must win three of its remaining 16 games to avoid matching the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers for the worst record in NBA history.

The Hornets have won seven consecutive games overall against Denver as well as seven straight at home against the Nuggets.

Charlotte had a big edge on the boards, outrebounding Denver, 51-34. The Hornets also forced 23 turnovers and converted them into 23 points.

"The game was a little raggedy, but all in all it's a W and we'll take it," Charlotte coach Dave Cowens said. "We used a lot of combinations and it was good to give guys a lot of minutes. We wanted to go inside and also give guys wide open shots on the perimeter."

Led by Newman's seven points, the Nuggets took a 25-24 lead at the end of the first quarter. Newman's layup with 22 seconds left gave Denver its one-point edge.

After a three-point play off a drive by LaPhonso Ellis pulled the Nuggets within 32-31 at the 6:33 mark of the second period, the Hornets closed the quarter on a 15-6 spurt to gain control.

Charlotte took the lead for good when Corey Beck answered the three-point play by Ellis. A pair of free throws by Geiger capped the run with 25 seconds left in the half, giving the Hornets a 47-37 advantage.

The Hornets expanded their lead with a 20-6 burst over the first seven minutes of the third quarter. Rice and Geiger each contributed six points to the spurt, with Geiger opening it with two free throws and closing it with a layup at 5:03 to make it 67-43.

Denver got no closer than 71-55 on a dunk by Tony Battie with 1:33 remaining in the third quarter.

Charlotte's lead grew to as much as 101-75 with 3:16 remaining after a layup by Curry, who scored 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Hornets forward Anthony Mason sat out with a sprained right ankle. J.R. Reid replaced him in the starting lineup and had 12 points and six assists in 33 minutes.

"It was important for us to get going after a loss," Rice said. "We tried to stay aggressive and everyone played. We came into the game thinking they were a dangerous team but we didn't take care of business like we should in the first quarter."
