GAME RECAP

Toni Kukoc scored 21 points and keyed a pair of third-quarter spurts that blew open the game as the Chicago Bulls eased past the reeling New Jersey Nets, 88-72, for their 14th win in 16 games.

Michael Jordan added 17 points and Scottie Pippen contributed 12 for the Bulls, who held the Nets to 10 points in the third quarter and swept the four-game season series. Chicago has won the last six meetings between the teams.

Chris Gatling scored 14 points for New Jersey, which endured its worst offensive effort of the season and has lost eight of its last nine games to put its playoff hopes in jeopardy.

"We played one good quarter tonight," Chicago coach Phil Jackson said. "We will have to play a lot better tomorrow evening against Indiana to win there. We were finally able to put something good together in the third quarter but otherwise we struggled tonight. We're coming off of a tough road trip and we need to get our legs under us."

New Jersey did get some good news as center Rony Seikaly was activated from the injured list prior to the game and scored six points in nine minutes.

"It was good to get on the court and get some minutes in," Seikaly said. "There's no way that I'm near 100 percent right now. I'm back on the court in three weeks when they told me it'll take six. The one thing I have to guard against is rushing myself and possibly re-injuring myself. I want to avoid that."

After a low-scoring first half, the Nets pulled into a 37-37 tie on a bucket by Sam Cassell just under a minute into the third quarter. But Kukoc fed Dennis Rodman for a layup, then buried a three-pointer to ignite a 14-2 burst. Ron Harper and Jordan followed with baskets to extend the lead to 46-37 with 8:15 remaining in the period.

Michael Cage tipped in a miss for New Jersey, but Kukoc knocked down a 10-footer, Pippen made one free throw and Ron Harper sank two to cap the run and increase Chicago's advantage to 51-39 halfway through the third.

The Nets got within 54-43 on a pair of free throws by Kerry Kittles with five minutes left in the quarter. But after buckets by Rodman and Pippen, Kukoc did the rest himself in a 13-0 run. He made two free throws at the 3:21 mark and dunked with 1:56 to go as the Bulls opened a 62-43 bulge.

"They're a championship team that understands if you get a seven-minute run of 12 or 14-0, the game is over," New Jersey coach John Calipari said. "We knew that too. "When you play the Bulls, you know they're going to come at you at some particular part of the ballgame. When I saw it happening to us in the third quarter, I knew it was time to get some players off the bench and get Seikaly in the game."

Kukoc buried a three-pointer with 1:18 left in the third and closed his run with a pair of free throws as Chicago took its largest lead, 67-43, with 27 seconds to play in the period. Cage's tip made it 67-45 entering the fourth.

"Nobody says or guarantees that you're going to play well every night," Jordan said. "I knew my night was screwed up when I missed a dunk shot (in the first quarter). It was just a matter of doing other things and just trying to get the game done. We got off to a sluggish start and missed a lot of easy shots early. But in the third quarter we were really united. Those minutes helped us get some rest in the fourth quarter."

Harper and Jordan had seven points apiece in the first quarter to give the Bulls a 22-21 lead. The lead was 37-35 at the break as the teams combined for just 29 points in the second period.

Harper finished with 11 points and Rodman added four points, 16 rebounds and five assists for the Bulls, who shot 45 percent (34-of-76) from the field and held a 47-34 rebounding advantage.

Sherman Douglas scored 12 points and Kittles had 11 for the Nets, who shot 39 percent (30-of-77). They again played without Keith Van Horn, who has a broken toe on his right foot.
