GAME RECAP

Karl Malone collected 29 points and eight assists and John Stockton scored 11 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Utah Jazz rallied for their 11th straight victory, 102-96 over the struggling Minnesota Timberwolves.

Utah trailed 91-87 after a 13-footer by Minnesota's Stephon Marbury with 4:47 left. Stockton stroked a jumper and hit 1-of-2 from the line before Bryon Russell's follow dunk put Utah ahead for good with 3:12 to play.

"We had a tough game yesterday in Detroit (a 109-98 win), so yeah, we're very pleased with this vctory," said Stockton. "Sometimes you get out of this habit of playing in tough games and executing down the stretch. So it's nice to win."

It was practically all Stockton from there, as he scored eight of Utah's final 10 points to secure the victory.

Jeff Hornacek collected 13 points and eight assists as the Jazz posted their ninth straight road win. Utah remains a game behind the NBA-leading Seattle SuperSonics, who downed the Los Angeles Lakers.

Marbury scored 26 points and Kevin Garnett added 19 and 16 rebounds for Minnesota, which lost for the ninth time in 12 games.

"We fought tonight. The layups at the end kind of killed us," Garnett said. "We can make all the excuses about the refs, but that's basketball."

Reserve Howard Eisley netted 12 points and Foster had seven and a season-high 10 rebounds for Utah, which shot 47 percent (38-of-80) from the field and was outrebounded, 49-42.

The Jazz's only significant edge came at the foul line, where they were 23-of-33 compared to 10-of-16 for the Timberwolves.

Down 92-91, the Wolves blew a chance to either tie or take the lead when Tom Hammonds missed two free throws with 2:33 left.

Stockton and Malone played a two-man game the next two trips down the court, with Stockton feeding Malone in the post and darting past Marbury on consecutive trips downcourt for easy backdoor layups. The two scores sandwiched a follow shot by Sam Mitchell and gave them a 96-93 edge with 1:28 to go.

Malone, fghting a backache, grabbed just fve rebounds.

"It started hurting right when I got on the floor," said Malone. "It's all right, its just one of those things you play through. It's not feeling great, but it's all right. I guess that's how I'm going to feel when get old."

Stockton scored again on the break and Hammonds answered with a dunk. Malone hit a tough, mid-range fallaway shot for a 100-95 lead with 42 seconds left before Marbury hit 1-of-2 and Stockton sank both from the line.

The Timberwolves scored a season-low 11 points in the second quarter but recovered to shoot a respectable 46 percent (41-of-89).

Minnesota trailed 44-38 at the break and was behind for much of the third quarter until coach Flip Saunders' first NBA ejection appeared to energize his team.

After Saunders was ejected for picking up his second technical foul with 6:12 to play in the period, the Wolves chipped away at an eight-point deficit to forge a 72-72 tie after three quarters.
