GAME RECAP

Dee Brown scored 24 points and Chauncey Billups added seven of his 18 in overtime as the Toronto Raptors denied the Denver Nuggets their record-averting ninth victory, 104-103, in a matchup of the worst teams in each conference.

The Raptors (14-50) have lost 14 of 18 games since the All-Star break, with each of their four victories coming in overtime. They are 5-1 in overtime this season.

Brown made 6-of-7 three-pointers as the Raptors hit a season-high 10 three-pointers in 19 attempts.

"We play our best basketball in overtime," Brown said. "We're focused and we play hard and aggressive on defense. We need to get that mentality every quarter.

"Billups is always aggressive with the ball, and when he's that way, he's tough to stop. He made some good passes tonight down the stretch to get us some good looks and some baskets."

The Nuggets (8-60) still need one win to match the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers, whose 9-73 mark was the worst in NBA history. They have 14 games remaining.

"We turned the ball over at the end of regulation and that was the big difference," Denver coach Bill Hanzlik said. "They were needless turnovers and we didn't get a shot. It's frustrating. Defensively we played good enough to win, but they made more plays at the end."

Billups opened the overtime with a jumper to give the Raptors a 97-95 edge. Anthony Goldwire, whose jumper won Tuesday's game at Washington, answered with a three-pointer to give Denver its last lead at 98-97 with 3:58 left.

A three-pointer by Brown gave Toronto a 100-98 lead but a jumper by Dean Garrett pulled the Nuggets into a tie with 2:16 to play. Four straight free throws by Billups gave the Raptors a 104-100 lead with 6.4 seconds left before Goldwire sank a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

"The credit goes to the players, they did a really good job," Toronto coach Butch Carter said. "I'd like to say it's fun coaching, but its getting a little exhausting. We're just looking for a little adrenaline to keep the guys going."

Doug Christie added 20 points and nine rebounds and Reggie Slater blocked five shots for Toronto, which improved to 3-0 at home against the Nuggets. The Raptors also won 84-80 in Denver on January 29th to sweep the season series.

Johnny Newman scored 24 points and LaPhonso Ellis added 17 and 15 boards for the Nuggets, who had won three of their last four games and were trying to post consecutive wins for just the second time this season. Newman, Garrett and Danny Fortson each had five blocks.

A 15-footer by Bobby Jackson gave Denver a 79-69 lead at the 11:00 minute mark of the fourth quarter, but the Raptors reeled off a 15-3 spurt in just under the next six minutes to regain the lead for the first time since the opening quarter.

Brown started the burst with a basket and a driving dunk by Billups closed it, making it 84-82 with 5:05 left in regulation.

Two free throws by Garrett pushed Denver into a 92-88 lead at the two-minute mark, but a dunk by Billups, a basket by John Wallace and a free throw by Marcus Camby gave the Raptors a 93-92 edge with 36 seconds left.

Thirteen seconds later, Christie added two more free throws to make it 95-92. A three-pointer by Cory Alexander with just under 17 seconds left evened the score, sending the game into overtime.

"Tonight we started off pretty good, we had a couple of leads, but at the end we needed to score," Goldwire said. "We had a couple of 24-second violations and a few turnovers that hurt us. Things go like that sometimes. You've gotta live with it."
