GAME RECAP

Mark Jackson sank a key free throw with 1.6 seconds to play and handed out 12 assists to move into fifth place on the all-time list as the Indiana Pacers pulled out a 95-91 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Jackson scored the game's final point, virtually clinching the win, and finished with 10 as Indiana rebounded from Tuesday's disappointing 90-84 loss to the Chicago Bulls. He reached 7,393 assists for his career, moving one past former Philadelphia 76ers great Maurice Cheeks.

Chris Webber had 24 points and 14 rebounds for the Wizards but missed a number of crucial shots in the final two minutes. After hitting two free throws to give Washington a 91-90 lead, Webber missed a pair from the line with 1:42 to go.

After the Wizards' Juwan Howard blew a layup, Rik Smits grabbed the rebound off a miss by Jackson and hit two foul shots to put the Pacers in front with a minute to go. Webber missed a layup in traffic and was off with the follow attempt, as Jackson pulled down the rebound.

"We've got to get everybody's timing back together," Webber said. "We're the only ones believing in us right now. We need to put teams away."

Reggie Miller, who scored 20 points, made two free throws to increase the lead to 94-91 with 13 seconds remaining before Webber missed a three-pointer and Calbert Cheaney missed a short jumper.

"This was definitely a big one, we really needed this," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "It wasn't pretty because we were sloppy in the fourth. We made a lot of turnovers and walked, but we hung in and a win is a win. Now we need to step our game up. I think we dodged a bullet tonight."

Rod Strickland had 24 points and 14 assists for Washington, which suffered its third loss in four games and dropped to ninth place in the Eastern Conference. The Wizards, who suffered an embarassing 90-89 home loss to the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday, now embark on a four-game western road trip.

"We got the ball where we needed to. We got inside and we got free throws, and it just didn't happen," Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "We're confident right now, but now we have to go on the road and that's where we need to do it."

Smits chipped in 15 points for Indiana, which moved within three games of Chicago for the best record in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers were outrebounded, 44-40, and shot just 46 percent (37-of-80) from the field compared to Washington's 49 percent (39-of-80), but still managed to win for the eighth time in 11 games.

"What we need to do now is to rebound. We have the shooters and the scorers, but that's where we are hurting now," Miller said. "Being consistent on a nightly basis will also get us ready for the playoffs. Keeping up with Chicago and Miami is our goal."

Miller scored 12 points in the third quarter, guiding Indiana to an 81-70 lead heading into the final period.

"I'm happy we got the win. We had to fight for our shots, especially in the fourth," Miller said. "Any given night, anything can happen. The ball just bounced our way."

Webber opened a 14-4 burst with three straight baskets, including a jumper that cut the deficit to 86-83 with 5:55 to go. A hook shot by Smits built the lead to 90-85, but Tracy Murray answered with a jumper, Strickland hit a layup and Webber made two free throws with 2:19 left to put the Wizards in front.

But the Wizards hit just 12-of-22 free throws overall, including a 4-of-9 effort from Webber. Fellow starting forward Juwan Howard, in his second game back from injury, had just 12 points and six rebounds.

"We need to be positive right now and we need a win," Strickland said. "We have to execute and make the shots and that's what it's all about."

Derrick McKey scored seven of his 11 points in the second quarter as Indiana opened 53-46 edge at halftime. He and Dale Davis each grabbed eight rebounds.

Chris Mullin chipped in 10 points for the Pacers, who swept the four-game season series from Washington despite scoring just 14 points in the fourth quarter.
