GAME RECAP

Bobby Phills scored 21 points and David Wesley added 18, 10 assists and eight rebounds as the red-hot Charlotte Hornets matched a team record with their sixth straight road win, 92-82 over the San Antonio Spurs.

Matt Geiger recorded 18 points and nine boards as the Hornets (43-24) won for the 13th time in their last 14 games and moved a season-high 19 games over .500.

Tim Duncan had 25 points and 12 rebounds and Vinny Del Negro added 12 points for the Spurs, who lost for just the second time in seven games. David Robinson finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, but shot just 2-for-12 in the second half.

"I want to congratulate Charlotte on a heckuva game," said San Antonio Gregg Popovich. "They were aggressive from the get-go. For the entire game they played defense and they executed on offense very well. They played like a team headed to the playoffs. We on the other hand were pitiful and none of us were pleased."

Charlotte's Glen Rice scored 14 points, although he shot just 4-for-11 from the field. Anthony Mason came off the bench and contributed nine points and nine rebounds in 33 minutes off the bench for the Hornets, who have won three of the last four meetings with San Antonio.

"We did a great job defensivley tonight and an especially good job on the big men," Phills said. "Matt and Vlade (Divac) did a great job of containing them. The shots were falling and we hit some clutch ones when we needed some points. It's hard when you have new guys come to the team. It took us up to this point to really settle down and come together. As long as we can keep our focus and play one game at a time things will take care of themselves."

The Hornets took the lead for good, 32-30, when Geiger drove for a layup with 8:57 left in the second period. That basket came in the midst of a 13-3 burst that Geiger capped with another layup for a 39-31 lead with 6:51 to go.

The Spurs chipped away at the lead and closed within 46-43 on a free throw by Del Negro with 44 seconds left in the first half. Wesley hit a free throw nine seconds later and Phills made a jumper just before the buzzer to give Charlotte a 51-43 lead at the half.

"We went and played a really good game and we're a real confident team right now," Rice said. "We're going to continue to try to play together. We feel we can beat anybody and we're staying together in the second half of the season. We took them out of the things they were trying to do."

The Hornets used a 10-2 third-quarter run to take their biggest lead of the game, 68-51, on Geiger's jumper with 5:38 to play. Jaren Jackson began and ended San Antonio's 11-4 burst that cut the deficit to 74-64 when he hit a 16-footer just before the buzzer.

San Antonio closed to 81-75 when Jackson hit a three-pointer with 5:27 left in the fourth quarter. San Antonio came no closer as Phills answered with a jumper 57 seconds later.
