GAME RECAP

Rik Smits' three-point play with 18 seconds left in overtime snapped a tie and Chris Mullin's heady defensive play on the ensuing inbounds pass lifted the Indiana Pacers past the reeling Milwaukee Bucks, 96-94.

After a turnaround lane jumper by Elliot Perry knotted the score, 89-89, with 33 seconds left, Mark Jackson backed down Perry before whistling a bullet pass to Smits, who cut across the lane, dunked and was fouled. He made the free throw for a three-point lead.

Milwaukee, which has dropped nine straight games, called timeout and inbounded at halfcourt. Michael Curry took the ball out and found Jerald Honeycutt along the sideline. But Mullin stepped in and pressured Honeycutt, who bounced the ball off his leg and out of bounds.

"They held us in check all day and we didn't catch up to them until the last minute," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "I thought we would come out and put them away early, but nobody wanted to step up early."

"We are a better basketball team than that," Jackson said. "They just came out and jumped on us. That last play Rik made a great move to the hoop, and we really pulled it together at the end of the game when it counts."

Curry finished with a career-high 21 points. Ray Allen led Milwaukee with 25, but missed a potential game-winning basket at the end of regulation.

"The guys played as hard as they possibly could and should be proud of themselves," said Bucks coach Chris Ford. "At the end of the game, we had a mental defensive breakdown when Smits broke open."

Reggie Miller scored 32 points and Smits added 15 and seven rebounds for Indiana, which has won five of six and inched within a victory of clinching a playoff spot.

After Miller hit a free throw with 44 seconds left in regulation to knot the game, 79-79, Milwaukee missed on its next trip. The Bucks came up with the offensive rebound and Allen ran down the clock but missed a pull-up jumper from the foul line.

Jackson opened the overtime with a three-pointer that gave Indiana its first lead of the contest. Allen hit a jumper and Ervin Johnson added a free throw to tie the game, 82-82. Miller sank two more from the line but Johnson hit another from the stripe. Antonio Davis hit two free throws with 2:44 to go to push the Pacers' advantage to 86-83.

Armon Gilliam sank a pull-up jumper and Johnson made a hook in the lane to put the Bucks on top, 87-86, with 1:59 to go. But Jackson came up with a three-point play to give Indiana a two-point lead. Mullin then missed consecutive three-pointers and Perry came up with a hoop at the other end to tie the game.

Mullin was just 3-of-11 for the field, including 0-of-6 from three-point range. But Miller was 10-of-17 from the floor and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.

"We need to go out there and set the tempo," Mullin said. "It is a very important stretch of the season for us, we need to show up every night. We have a tough schedule the next month. Tonight we did what we had to do to win."

Allen was 9-of-26 from the field and Johnson finished with 18 rebounds for Milwaukee, which led by 13 in the second quarter and held a 41-35 edge at halftime.
