GAME RECAP

Bryant Reeves continued his hot play with 35 points and 12 rebounds and Michael Smith added 12 and a career-high 18 boards as the Vancouver Grizzlies set a team record with their 16th win, a 106-95 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Grizzlies, who won 15 games in their inaugural season of 1995-96, improved to just 16-52 with their record-setting triumph. Vancouver also had 36 rebounds at the break and 61 overall, both franchise records, as it snapped a seven-game losing streak.

"I thought it was very important to get a result (win), especially when you're looking at this late in the season and you're not going to the playoffs," said Reeves. "We've just come in and give it everything we have, night in and night out, and have come up empty. But tonight we gave the same effort and came away with a victory."

Reeves is averaging 20.6 points over his last six games, more than five above his season average. His short jumper early in the second quarter ignited a 20-4 run that opened a 17-point bulge for the Grizzlies. Los Angeles cut the deficit to single digits briefly in the third quarter but was unable to climb all the way back.

Eric Piatkowski netted 20 points and Rodney Rogers 18 for the Clippers, who have lost their last three games by a combined 51 points.

"We didn't do a good job on 'Country' (Reeves), double-teaming him," admitted Piatkowski. "I think they killed us on the boards. I thought they did a great job defensively. Every time we shot the ball we never got any second chances, and our transition defense is terrible."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim totaled 16 points and reserves Bobby Hurley and Blue Edwards added 12 and 11, respectively. Smith went 5-of-6 from the field, set a team record with 12 rebounds in the first quarter and tied Reeves' club mark with 13 first-half boards.

"It was just another day at the office," Smith said. "But it was a big victory for us. The guys in here said that L.A. beat them on the boards down there. We just went out, all 12 of us, and played hard. We're playing for pride."

The Grizzlies hit 44 percent (41-of-93) of their shots and held a 61-45 rebounding edge.

Los Angeles shot an abysmal 38 percent (34-of-89), including 8-of-21 from three-point range. The Clippers also failed to do the job at the free throw line, hitting just 19-of-28 attempts.

Isaac Austin collected 14 points and seven boards and Lamond Murray and Maurice Taylor each scored 12 points for Los Angeles, who now owns the NBA's second-worst record at 15-52. The Denver Nuggets bring up the rear at 8-62.

The Clippers took the early lead but were quickly overtaken midway through the first quarter. They fell behind by six but pulled within 29-28 on Rogers' tip-in with 19 seconds left in the period.

But the Grizzlies roared out to a huge lead in the second quarter, as Reeves and Edwards scored seven points apiece to pace the deciding outburst. Edwards' dunk with 5:11 to go gave Vancouver a 49-32 advantage.

Trailing 55-40 at halftime, Los Angeles made a small run and sliced the gap to 63-55 with 6:44 to go in the third quarter on two free throws by Piatkowski. The Grizzlies answered 14 seconds later with Smith's dunk, then after Taylor cut it to nine with a foul shot, Vancouver's Lee Mayberry drained a deep three-pointer and Smith dunked on the break for a 70-56 lead.

Los Angeles got as close as nine points in the final quarter, but a 6-0 burst capped by two free throws by Edwards lengthened the Grizzlies' advantage to 91-76 with nine minutes left.
